Warning: If you are a member of the Ms. Rachel cult, this episode will be a tough listen. Please don't say I didn't warn you!
Andreina Rosales is also a Millennial toddler mom, and she is working towards her PhD. It wasn't until her own son was born at just 6 months gestation that her world was rocked when the doctor explained he likely will have autism as a result of being a premie.
From that point, Andreina became obsessed with researching the causes of autism, and we discussed the autism-screen time connection. Yes, there is a type of autism that presents as screen-induced.
We would not do this conversation justice if we skirted around the topic of Ms. Rachel. Ms. Rachel is the archetype of a mainstream Millennial mom's idol, and the sad irony of her show is that children are not actually becoming better communicators despite this being the show's premise. Andreina explains the difference between verbalizing and communicating.
Andreina and I reminisce about the nostalgia of the low-stimulating, cozy classic shows of our early-to-mid 90s childhood and how stark the contrast is with today's over-stimulating, brain-rot slop children's programming.
There is a disturbing new finding that Andreina has recently uncovered in her research, and it's thematic across most modern young children's programming. Be sure to listen until the very end for it.
Please don't be hard on yourself if your kids have been exposed to addictive modern kids' tv. There is such a thing as neuroplasticity, and a screen-tox may be just the trick. Not all hope is lost.
