Ever considered that your simple lifestyle choices might actually be… acts of rebellion?
Things like staying home to raise a family, choosing what you eat, or being content with what you have can be seen as going against mainstream expectations. What if these choices are not about following the rules but rather about challenging the status quo?
Today I’m challenging you to question narratives pushed by the media and consider that your lifestyle choices—whether it’s staying home, opting for a healthier diet, fixing what’s old instead of buying what’s new, getting out of debt, or a million other choices!—might actually be forms of rebellion against a prescribed way of living. I’m also suggesting what is considered “mainstream” by the media might not actually represent the majority. And can we also talk about the evolution of feminism, and ponder how choosing to stay home has become a controversial act in itself?
Let’s remain critical thinkers who understand the implications of our choices. And let’s remember that rebellion doesn’t have to be loud or confrontational; sometimes, living quietly and intentionally is the most powerful form of protest. (Main topic starts at 7:20)

Whether we’re willing to admit it or not, many of us worry about what others think when we take on new ventures or make changes in our lives. Whether it’s starting a new project on the homestead or making a big life decision, the fear of judgment can hold us back.
But here’s the truth I’m talking about today: most people just aren’t thinking about us as much as we think they are. They’re wrapped up in their own lives, just as we are in ours. (Main topic starts at time stamp 3:50)
Also tune in to hear my short updates from the lifestead, including:
There is a freedom that comes with understanding that most people are more focused on their own lives than ours. So don’t hold back on making a change or a decision because of what others might think. The truth is, most people are too focused on their own lives to worry about yours.
So with that in mind, here’s the question: what do you want to do? 🙂

In our modern world, the concept of aging often gets a bad rap. Which, when I think about it, is pretty odd—since not everyone is lucky enough to be able to do it.
In this week’s episode of the Farmish Kind of Life Podcast (295) I’m talking about the messages that tell us to fight our aging, hide our aging, and do everything we can to look, feel, and act younger. We will also dig into the relatively modern concept of heading to the doctor with every new creak, pop, and ouch brought on by aging (because something is obviously horribly wrong!)
This episode also asks some tough questions. For instance, are we maintaining health… or chasing youth? (Main topic starts at time stamp 8:07)
Also hear updates from the lifestead, including:
The privilege of aging is a gift not granted to everyone. Let’s shift our focus from chasing youth to celebrating everything your body can still do, while acknowledging that what we can do today may not be possible tomorrow. Because, my friends, we’re all getting older.
…if we’re lucky.

There is a certain allure, I suppose, to living like the Amish or stepping back in time to a world without modern conveniences. I’ve been reading two books lately about two couples who did this very thing for a whole year. But while these books offer fascinating insights, not everyone can—or wants to—take such drastic steps. Today I’m pondering how those of us still in the modern world can integrate technology (specifically our phones, the internet, and social media) into our lives without letting it take over. (Main topic starts at time stamp 4:52)

I’m very honest in this episode about my own challenges with setting boundaries regarding my smart phone, the internet, and social media, especially when it’s an integral part of my work with A Farmish Kind of Life. It can be tricky to manage an online presence while maintaining a sense of control over your digital life… but that’s exactly what we need to do.
This episode of the Farmish Kind of Life podcast is really a call to action for all of us to evaluate our relationship with our phones, the internet, and social media. It should all be a tool rather than a tether, and we need to be intentional about how we use it.
Are we honest enough to admit when our phones, the internet, and social media have become a problem? Can we find a middle ground that sees us using all of it without letting it take over our lives?

I know that “borrowing a cup of sugar from a neighbor” isn’t as common now as when I was a kid, but it’s a simple act that underscores the essence of community. In today’s episode, I’m posing some thought-provoking questions: Who would you call if you needed immediate help? Do you have someone kinda sorta nearby who could lend a hand in one of Life’s hiccups?
You might have a ton of online friends (people you talk to everyday!) but chances are your online friends live too far away to let your dog out or help fix your flat tire. So today I’m highlighting the need for strong, local relationships that go beyond online connections. (Main topic starts at timestamp 6:00)
Other updates from the lifestead include:
I hope this episode makes us all “think.” It’s full of tough questions as I consider why in-person communities seem harder to build, and point out a few things we might need to wrap our heads around (or let go of) in order to make reliable in-person communities a reality in our modern world.

From the overwhelming choices at the grocery store to the guilt of what we put on our plates, our anxiety surrounding food is REAL.
Whether you’re exhausted by the choices, confused by conflicting information, frustrated by the costs, or just trying to do the best you can, this episode is for you. It’s important to stay informed and make healthy choices, but I believe it is equally important to not stress excessively about food. Call me crazy but I think stress can actually negate the benefits of even the healthiest diets — whatever diet that might be.
In this episode I also dig in to the privilege associated with being able to worry about food choices in the first place. This is a reminder that not everyone has the luxury of choosing between organic and non-organic, or even knowing what they’ll have for their next meal. I hope this episode will encourage empathy and understanding towards others who might be in different stages of life or facing different challenges.
As you listen, I don’t know if you will nod along, or feel a sense of relief, or think I’m out of my lane. But I hope this episode will inspire you to make the best choices you can, while also giving yourself (and others!) grace and understanding. (Main topic starts at 5:20)

Ever feel overwhelmed by what you “have” to get done? In today’s episode, I talk about the reality of to-do lists and how they fit into real life, especially when you get thrown (more than) a few curveballs. Sometimes we make our to-do list an idol, and we’ve gotta knock that stuff off. (Main topic starts at 6:50)

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the abundance of your harvest, this week’s episode is for you. I was recently given perspective on “what we’re able to do”, which served as a reminder of why we chose this chaotic, super busy, but undeniably beautiful life. This “chaos” is often exactly what we asked for. (Main topic starts at 6:24)

I hope this episode reminds you that although this time of year is a whirlwind, we’re so lucky to be able to live this life.

“Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
In this week’s episode, I’m talking about hidden knowledge and unseen battles. We all walk around with untold stories and unshared news, and it ends up shaping our interactions (and relationships) in ways others might never understand or be aware of. (Main topic starts at 9:51)

I hope this episode will be helpful and bring you perspective. As I currently hold on to sensitive information and knowledge, I am reminded that everyone has their own hidden struggles. Whether it’s health issues, personal conflicts, or unspoken fears, there’s always something beneath the surface that we might not see.
