This week we heard a message on Mark 11 and the story of Jesus cleansing the temple. Normally we think of Jesus as being very calm, however in this scene we see a very different picture of Jesus. Here we see Jesus expressing anger rooted in his love for the temple. While the temple was supposed to be set apart, it had become influenced by the marketplace values of the world. Through Jesus’ response we see that sometimes it’s necessary to overturn things in order to embrace God’s vision for our lives.

This week, we heard a message on Luke 9 and the would-be disciples. As Jesus heads to the cross, He runs into three different men who for various reasons, were unwilling to surrender all to follow Jesus. Whether it was their desire for comfort, desire to meet family expectations, or the desire to take care of their own needs before committing to God, ultimately all of these things prevented these men from following Jesus.

This week, we heard a message on John 6 and the crowd that was seeking out physical bread to eat while Jesus was trying to provide them with so much more. Jesus tells the crowd that he is the bread of life, that he is what will ultimately sustain them. We could either respond like the crowd, grumbling and walking away from Jesus. Or like Peter saying, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

We see Abraham’s faith in God as he is tasked to sacrifice his most beloved son, Isaac. As Abraham is about to sacrifice his son, God stops him and provides a ram as sacrifice in his stead. This story gives us a glimpse into the gospel message, and how God provided the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, his own beloved son, Jesus. Hope as you watch this message you are blessed by the picture of how much God loves each of us!

This week, we heard a message about Ruth and the commitment that she made to Naomi. Ruth places this relationship above her own interests and in doing so shows what total commitment looks like. In our “you do you” society, Ruth’s actions seem crazy. However, through her life, we are able to see that a life committed to God and others brings so much more joy than living selfishly for yourself.

This week, we heard a message on Moses and the fact that God can use our failures if we continue to hold on to Him. Even though Moses was rejected by his own people, God was able to use the challenging times to grow him and train him for what He had in store. Similarly, God can use our desert times to shape and humble us so that we can do His work.

This week, Dan Chiang shares the story of Jacob as seen in Genesis 25 &27. Jacob is someone who has the personal mantra so familiar with our modern-day society – “I need to take care of myself.” With this mindset, Jacob is willing to pay relational costs in order to get what he wants and gain some sense of security. However, ultimately God wrestles with Jacob which allows him to honestly confront who he is.

This week, Angell shares on the story of Abraham in Genesis 12. God invites Abraham to follow Him but doesn’t give any details as to what that will look like. Even though it was scary and challenging, Abraham chose to take God at His word and trust Him. Through choosing to follow God, Abraham was able to become a blessing to many. This week Pastor Daniel shares on Acts 9 as we take a look at the conversion of Apostle Paul (formerly Saul). Before becoming Christian, Saul intensely persecuted Christians and would’ve been the last person you’d think would start following Jesus. But after his encounter with God in which he was made blind for three days, Saul came to see that Jesus was indeed the son of God. Saul conversion gives hope to us all in that even the foremost of sinners like him are able to receive salvation through God’s grace and are given a new mission to proclaim Jesus.

This week, Pastor Daniel shares on Matthew 6 as we take a look at the Pharisees. The Pharisees were the religious elite of Jesus’ time. If anyone was disciplined and “spiritual”, it was them. However, it was also clear that many of their actions were done before people in order to receive praise rather than as genuine acts of worship before God. While we will always be a mixed bag of motivations, we should strive to live before God rather than constantly stressing about how others perceive us. Our identity and worth are secured in God’s love for us.
