I started this book with a question: Have you ever flown an airplane? About that question...

I’ve never felt like I give too much information for too little return when I’m jabbing because I don’t look for a return from everything I do. The return, to me, is often as simple as a person having a lightbulb moment and figuring something out— because I gave them an insight they didn’t have before.

It's a secret that's been weighing me down for 34 years.

Yes, you read that right, for 34-years I've hidden this from the world. No, I didn't hide it out of shame or embarrassment, I hid it because people are fast to judge, to form opinions about someone based on a slice of information from a point in time in that persons life. That is why I've kept this secret for so many years.

It didn't come to light because I felt a need to purge, to share it with the world, instead, it was during a deep conversation with a close friend, Pamela Hughes.

Pamela and I have been friends for nearly two decades and we've shared so much information with one another over the years that she was totally caught off guard when I opened up to her about it. In fact, she found out what my secret was almost 12-hours before my wife did.

OK, hang on a sec. Why on earth would I share a deep secret with a close friend before my wife? Context. The context of our conversation was around choices, difficult choices, choices that impact not only today, but tomorrow, and all the tomorrows after.

The clock was ticking... the cat was now out of the bag and I felt compelled to share this with my wife because in that moment I shared it with Pamela, I knew I had to share it with my fans, followers, and friends.

The weight of carrying a secret for so long has taken its toll on me too. Again, not because I am ashamed, but I simply didn't want to deal with the judgement.

It was the morning after my call and I was getting ready for my workday, Allison was doing her hair when the conversation began.

Don’t expect miracles when you start your business. There are going to be early setbacks. In fact, there are going to be setbacks throughout your business life, and I’m not talking about setbacks of, like, a day without sales. I’m talking about weeks or months when shit just goes stagnant.

When that happens, people tend to go on the defense. What they do is, they tend to stop doing all the things that brought them early success. They go in the opposite direction and they start right hooking or trying to sell, because they’re getting desperate, and desperation leads people to do stupid shit. Instead, embrace the setbacks and recognize that there are things you might have shifted or changed. Get back to the basics of doing what you did to launch your new business.

If Google made a roadmap for how to grow a business, that roadmap would be called Gary Vaynerchuk. It’s just unbelievable how many people have the desire, or say they have the desire to do something, yet their actions don’t map to their words. Open the door, step outside, and do it. Take the action first. It’s not going to happen on its own. Water does not boil unless you put the burner on and crank it. Looking at it won’t help. Getting ready won’t help. Until you turn it on, it ain’t gonna boil. Business is the same way.
