L'ospite di questo episodio è Henri Aymonod, atleta, trail runner, sci alpinista, amico di lunga data, persona fuori dagli schemi, assolutamente difficile da definire e da inquadrare nei canoni e nelle consuetudini sociali.
Henri viene dalla Valle d'Aosta, è il terzo di tre gemelli, ha scalato diverse volte Monte Bianco e Gran Paradiso, ha portato a termine due trofei Mezzalama, ha corso in 31:34 il vertical di Chiavenna, ha una posizione aero assurda in bicicletta, potrebbe essere un mezzofondista veloce mancato ma soprattutto, prepara un’ottima pasta alle vongole.
Ci conosciamo da dieci anni, dal nostro primo raduno con la nazionale a Sestriere nell’estate del 2014; da allora siamo cambiati noi e molte cose intorno a noi. Abbiamo parlato di Kilian Jornet e Alpine Connections, di allenamento, di ultrarunning e mountain running, ma senza contrapporli l’uno all’altro. E poi media, di sport di partecipazione e sport di tifosi, di pressione, performance e professionismo nel nostro sport.

La retorica del sacrificio ad ogni costo in nome di un obiettivo superiore fa danni irreparabili: l’idea che senza sofferenza, senza stare male e che soffrendo solo per il gusto di soffrire non si possa ottenere niente di buono, niente che possa essere considerato socialmente accettabile, figuriamoci se di successo. C’è una differenza enorme tra lavorare per un obiettivo facendo la giusta fatica e utilizzando tutte le risorse che una persona è in grado di mettere in campo, e l’idea che uno debba annullarsi, uccidersi di fatica, di allenamenti e di sofferenza gratuita per raggiungere qualcosa di buono. Sempre più atleti si stanno accorgendo che non è così, che atleti sani, felici e in equilibrio con se stessi e con il mondo che li circonda sono quelli meglio in grado di performare e di avere una carriera longeva e di successo sul lungo periodo.

L’ospite di questo episodio è Mattia Gaffuri, atleta, ciclista, coach, host del podcast Ciclismo Kompetente e molte altre cose che volutamente mi dimenticherò di menzionare.
Per chi non conoscesse Gaffu: ha 24 anni, è stato finalista alla Zwift Academy 2023, è in possesso dei KOM Stelvio, Nesso e Bisbino, ha vinto le granfondo Colnago, Dolomiti e Mont Blanc, nel 2024 è arrivato quindi all'UCI Gravel World Series La Indomable. Per chi ancora lo ricorda dal mondo dell’atletica, ha vinto una Cinque Mulini da allievo e da cadetto è stato in grado di correre i 2000m più volte sotto i 6 minuti.

Guardando gli europei di Roma, allo stadio e in tv, così come ho fatto con tanti altri meeting e campionati di atletica, ho avuto di nuovo la speranza che tante persone che fanno trail li abbiano anch’esse guardati e si siano emozionati proprio come me, e dalle gare, dalle performance, dai successi e dagli insuccessi degli atleti abbiano potuto trarre ispirazione e insegnamenti.
Possiamo essere nello stesso tempo partecipanti allo sport e fan dello sport, ed è la direzione che mi piacerebbe che più persone prendessero, come movimento. Possiamo prendere dalla pista e dalla strada l’attenzione per i dettagli, senza che sconfini in ossessione maniacale, possiamo prendere una definizione migliore di cosa significhi allenarsi bene ed essere atleti di alto livello, possiamo prendere una struttura organizzativa più sensata e razionale.

La realtà tecnica è che un vertical è molto più simile a una 50 miglia, così come un 1500m o un 10000m sono molto più simili a una maratona che a un 100m, dal punto di vista metabolico. Che è quello che conta per i nostri muscoli e le nostre cellule, a cui non importa nulla delle sovrastrutture che costruiamo attorno a questo sport, devono solo produrre energia per fare quello che il cervello gli chiede.
Questo non è per sminuire il grado di versatilità che ho raggiunto, una certa soddisfazione nel cogliere due bei risultati e nel portare a termine questo esperimento. E’ per mettere le cose nella giusta prospettiva, che spesso o manca ed è filtrata da bias culturali non sempre utili, non sempre positivi per riflettere su quello che facciamo.
Volevo demolire le scuse che “non è la mia specialità” o “per me sono gare troppo veloci” che tipicamente si sentono nominare, vedere come avrei recuperato da una 50 miglia corsa vicino a ciò che di meglio so tirare fuori da me stesso, da un viaggio intercontinentale con 9 ore di fuso orario, dalle complicanze che inevitabilmente sorgono e vanno affrontate, dalla linearità dei processi che uno quasi sempre si immagina, ma da cui bisogna sempre essere pronti a deviare.

È difficile trovare delle ragioni concrete che possano spiegare perché sono venuto fin qui, a 10mila km da casa, nell’angolo più remoto e probabilmente più piovoso degli Stati Uniti continentali, il Pacific Northwest, per correre 50km in una foresta.
Oggi è il penultimo giorno per me qui a Boulder, e mi è sembrato il momento opportuno per fermarmi un momento a riflettere sulla mia esperienza americana fin qui.

Migliorare, correre più forte, è difficile. Non esistono istruzioni semplici o scorciatoie per farlo. Si può migliorare sotto molti punti di vista, anche solamente correre con maggiore consapevolezza, con meno fatica, con più felicità.
Credo di essere piano piano giunto alla realizzazione che per correre forte uno degli aspetti chiave sia la capacità di aspettare che le cose, semplicemente, succedano. Accadano. Avere pazienza, correre i km, fare i lavori alle intensità corrette, dare al corpo gli stimoli giusti, affrontare gli allenamenti con consapevolezza e un giorno, quasi come per magia, ci si troverà a correre quegli stessi chilometri con un po’ meno fatica, con qualche decimo di millimole di lattato in meno rispetto a mesi o anni prima, con qualche secondo in meno sulla stessa ripetuta.

Sono accadute due cose, durante l'ultimo mese, destinate in qualche modo ad influenzare come le persone faranno trail da qui ad alcuni anni, in misure diverse e di cui per ora non possiamo conoscere esattamente l’entità.
Una parte della nostra comunità ha reagito a queste diverse notizie in maniera in un certo senso simile: parlandone. Altri le hanno apprese ma apparentemente non hanno avuto reazioni, altri ancora di questi avvenimenti non sono a conoscenza, come è normale che sia. Mi è sembrato di percepire da parte di un certo gruppo di persone un desiderio, una fame di argomenti di cui discutere, di temi trasversali che non siano per forza i risultati delle gare o le shoe review, che possano semplicemente darci un motivo per confrontarci e parlare. La cosa che forse ci manca è un luogo dove poterlo fare. La community, in senso lato, non ha un substrato ben preciso su cui svilupparsi. Forse non ha nemmeno la massa critica necessaria per raggiungere numeri tali da invogliare un sufficiente numero di persone a parlare di un certo tema. Forse non ha nemmeno interesse a farlo. Sono tutte domande aperte a cui questo episodio cercherà di dare delle risposte, anch’esse aperte e per nulla esaustive.
