The Shift with Katherine Maslen

Are you bacteria, or human? Part 2

Listen Later

The antibiotic industry is worth billions. Every day, millions of people around the world are receiving antibiotics in various forms, in a bid for better health. But is it really the wisest choice? While antibiotics can save lives, we need to think about the amount we take and how often we take them. Are they just a matter of convenience that can cause more damage than we think, or do they have a rightful place in our health regime?

Welcome to The Shift, an investigative series that follows naturopath, nutritionist and author Katherine Maslen as she explores the dysfunctional nature of the health industry and provides people with the tools, knowledge and understanding to make the shift in their lives. Each episode of The Shift features interviews with industry experts in gut and general health from across the globe. They accompany Katherine in tackling the difficult questions surrounding global health. If you want to make the shift towards more informed decisions regarding better health, then this podcast is for you.

In episode #15 of The Shift, are you bacteria, or human? Part 2, Katherine digs deep into antibiotics, including the main issues surrounding their prescription. She is joined by  experts Summer Bock, Rodney Dietert, Dr Felice Gersh and Kale Brock, and together they attempt to untangle the mystery of antibiotics.

They also discuss the following:

  • What are the two main issues with such a wide prescribing of antibiotics?
  • The effects of antibiotic use on our gut health
  • What happens each time you take antibiotics, and the negative effects they can have
  • The long-term impairments that can be passed on from parent to child, if their microbiome isn’t in the best shape
  • What we can choose instead of antibiotics, to promote better health
  • The history of antibiotics, and the misinformation around them
  • Why germs can actually be beneficial!
  • How the microbiome of a mother can affect their unborn children
  • The potential pitfalls of too much sterilization
  • What we do to damage our microbiomes, without even knowing
  • The different types of microbiomes in our body, and the importance of each
  • How advances in technology and changes to diet and lifestyle have impacted our gut health
