Let's Ranch it Up! Are flies biting into your potential profits? Do you know what type of flies you are battling on your outfit: We give you some great points on how to identify the flies and what those potential economic losses could be. We are all watching the markets and trying to gauge how high or low cattle prices will be when we need to sell. Do we have the knowledge and facts of just what those prices need to be for us to make a profit? We bring you some great tips on how to get started. As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets.
If your outfit is like ours, you are battling the flies, and lots of them this year. It seems nothing is getting a break. It is very important that we know what types of flies we are fighting. There are 4 types of flies that exist on a cow/calf, stocker, feedlot, and dairy outfit. They are Horn Flies, Face Flies, Stable Flies, and House Flies. All of them have a tremendous economic impact on our bottom line, as much as $50 dollars a head and up! Those are real-life numbers and significant ones at that. Horn Flies and Face Flies are the most common in a cow/calf operation and with stocker cattle. Horn Flies exist on the backs of cattle while Face Flies feed around the eyes and tear ducts. Stable Flies bite the legs of cattle and often cause them to bunch up. Economic losses due to the mismanagement of flies can result in as much as one billion dollars a year! Experts from Elanco Animal Health join us on this episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show to help identify what we are “bugged” with!
