  • Episode 21: 021 // Burnout Sucks
This weeks episode is a tough one – burnout. What better time to record a podcast episode about burnout, than when I am in the middle of an epic burnout? There are tears and some sniffles but I do identify the signs of burnout. I also speak about what I have done (and am currently doing) to come back from a career burnout. I understand this isn’t the usual ‘be an artist, it’s great!’ type episode. This may have a few people questioning their desire to work full time for themselves. Some others may deeply connect with this area of creative life. Please remember if you are in a similar space, you are not alone. Lifeline has a great helpline on 13 11 14. Or if you don’t feel like talking, you can text 0477 13 11 14. The book I mentioned: The Artists Way by Julia Cameron (affiliate link) ——— Thank you so much for tuning into the Art + Business + Murals PodcastIf you’d like to say ‘hi’ to me, or if you have any podcast topic ideas or artists you’d like me to interview, please email: [email protected] Please follow along: Instagram // https://www.instagram.com/sculleydesign/ Facebook // https://www.facebook.com/sculleydesign You Tube // https://www.youtube.com/@SarahSculley/videos Website // https://www.sculleydesign.comFeel free to give this podcast a star rating and ‘follow’ so you are notified when new episodes come out each Monday. • Episode 20: 020 // Interview with Maggi McDonald: Building a social media brand
Today I am speaking with the generous and colourful Maggi McDonald. Maggi is an artist & surface designer based in Sydney, Australia. After growing her family she studied design which led her to rediscover her love of painting. Nature is a constant inspiration in her work and her brightly coloured abstract gardens and landscapes are inspired by the natural beauty of her adopted country Australia, and South Africa where she grew up. Maggi was born in Cape Town and lived in London before settling in Sydney. She loves traveling and learning about world cultures and in particular the symbols and patterns used in textiles and art.In this interview we talk about building a social media presence through consistency, creating content (and being paid for it), managing burnout and the evolution of creative careers.  If you’d like to check out Maggi's work, or get in touch with her you can find her on:Website // https://www.maggimcdonald.comInstagram // https://www.instagram.com/maggimcdonaldart/Facebook // https://www.facebook.com/maggimcdonaldartist/  ——— Thank you so much for tuning into the Art + Business + Murals PodcastIf you’d like to say ‘hi’ to me, or if you have any podcast topic ideas or artists you’d like me to interview, please email: [email protected] Please follow along:Instagram // https://www.instagram.com/sculleydesign/Facebook // https://www.facebook.com/sculleydesignYou Tube // https://www.youtube.com/@SarahSculley/videosWebsite // https://www.sculleydesign.comFeel free to give this podcast a star rating and ‘follow’ so you are notified when new episodes come out each Monday. • Episode 19: 019 // Advice for emerging artists from artists
This weeks episode is not entirely an artist interview. It is a quick, one question interview with a handful of artists. I ask a number of artists from around the globe, what advice they have for emerging artists. Pour yourself a Friday afternoon beverage and enjoy the party vibe (and some background laughter and random children giggling into the microphone). Artists interviewed were part of Micro Galleries ‘The Good Lab’ in Chiang Mai, Thailand. • Episode 17: 017 // Interview with Kate Owen: Collaboration over competition
Today I am speaking with the vibrant and entrepreneurial Kate Owen. Kate started out painting in the storage acco a few hours a day for about a year to develop a practice. After starting to sell work she created a dedicated purpose built-studio, a sanctuary of peace and positivity in which to create. This allowed her to dedicate more time to her practice.During this time she sold work through Art Lovers Australia, Nutmeg Home in Goondiwindi and a few other retail gift stores and pop up shops. To journal her progress she started her instagram account in late 2017 concentrating on putting her best foot forward on her social accounts. This led to Greenhouse Interiors reaching out in 2019 to invite her to be part of their team of artists which was thrilling and a major advancement for her art career. Kate has been lucky to have the opportunity to exhibit solo a number of times with the support of wonderful agents and many collectors who find joy in her work. In this interview we talk about the mix of fashion, baking and art, Kate’s experience with Greenhouse Interiors, collaboration and licensing.  We mentioned a few projects:The mural we collaborated on in Goondiwindi: https://www.sculleydesign.com/murals?lightbox=dataItem-l7ea1j9o9 If you’d like to check out Kate’s work, or get in touch with her you can find her on:Website // https://www.kateowenartwork.com.auInstagram // https://www.instagram.com/kowenart/Facebook // https://www.facebook.com/kateowenartwork/Greenhouse Interiors // https://greenhouseinteriors.com.au——— Thank you so much for tuning into the Art + Business + Murals PodcastIf you’d like to say ‘hi’ to me, or if you have any podcast topic ideas or artists you’d like me to interview, please email: [email protected] Please follow along:Instagram // https://www.instagram.com/sculleydesign/Facebook // https://www.facebook.com/sculleydesignYou Tube // https://www.youtube.com/@SarahSculley/videosWebsite // https://www.sculleydesign.comFeel free to give this podcast a star rating and ‘follow’ so you are notified when new episodes come out each Monday. • Episode 13: 013 // The Great Instagram Experiment
I sometimes get stuck in the 'death scroll' on Instagram. I don't like it. It doesn't make me feel good. I get frustrated when I don't have 50k followers like other artist do. Am I not as good as them? I often think that if I had 50k followers then online artworks sales would be so easy. The frustration is mainly around the fact that I have no idea how to increase my 1600 followers to 50k. I have read articles. I have listened to podcasts. I have done online courses. I have scrolled Facebook pages with all the advice. It is all overwhelming. I thought the best way to figure out 'the Insta-algorithm' is to experiment with it. I broke down the first 3 months of 2023 into two week blocks. Each fortnight I would try a different 'tactic' and below are the results - not just based on followers, but my mental health, productivity and enjoyment. Throughout this time I continued my normal, inconsistent posting of photos (occasional reels) and jibber jabber. This post walks through the outcomes from the experiment and my overall thoughts. This episode is also a blog post:https://www.sculleydesign.com/single-post/the-results-of-the-insta-experiment The snake incident:https://www.instagram.com/p/CoJAurpBcUU/ The Group Coaching Program:https://www.sculleydesign.com/creative-business-membership  ——— Thank you so much for tuning into the Art + Business + Murals PodcastIf you’d like to say ‘hi’ to me, or if you have any podcast topic ideas or artists you’d like me to interview, please email: [email protected] Please follow along: Instagram // https://www.instagram.com/sculleydesign/ Facebook // https://www.facebook.com/sculleydesign You Tube // https://www.youtube.com/@SarahSculley/videos Website // https://www.sculleydesign.comFeel free to give this podcast a star rating and ‘follow’ so you are notified when new episodes come out each Monday.
