Bar Star Cattle Upcoming Bull Sale March 20th

Listen Later

Chad Murnin of Bar Star Cattle in Musselshell, Montana, have built a successful purebred Hereford and commercial cattle operation from scratch over the past 20 years. Located in the Bull Mountains, their ranch spans over 23,000 acres and represents a testament to young agricultural entrepreneurs who have overcome significant challenges in land acquisition and ranch establishment. The upcoming annual bull and female sale, scheduled for March 20, 2025, will feature 41 age-advantage and yearling bulls, along with 30 black baldy replacement heifers. Chad highlighted their unique approach to cattle breeding, focusing on breaking traditional Hereford stereotypes by emphasizing feet and udder quality, pigmentation, and muscling. Their fall calving program provides advantages in cattle management, allowing cows to winter more efficiently and bulls to develop robustly on grasslands. The Murnin pride themselves on breeding functional, practical cattle that perform in real-world conditions. They don't breed specifically for show rings but instead showcase cattle bred for commercial productivity. Their genetic program centers around two primary sire groups - Bar Star Nemesis and Bar Star Rebellion - with most bulls being bred and raised on their own ranch. Their replacement heifer offering includes purebred and baldy cattle, with 10 elite heifers from their own herd and 20 from long-time customer the Scoyne family. The sale will be conducted virtually through live screens and online platforms, reflecting modern agricultural marketing techniques. Chad and Stephanie are committed to transparency, inviting potential buyers to visit their ranch, view their cattle, and understand their breeding philosophy. Their operation represents a modern approach to cattle breeding: practical, performance-driven, and focused on providing high-quality genetics to commercial producers. The podcast interview showcases their passion for agriculture, commitment to genetic improvement, and the challenges of building a successful ranch in today's competitive agricultural landscape.
