Juan Carlos Rojas In this episode of Beyond The Pitch, Juan is joined by Deportivo Saprissa president Juan Carlos Rojas. Rojas is a graduate of the Georgetown University and has been a lifelong Saprissa fan that is living the dream of his boyhood club and has led the team to become the winningest team in Costa Rica and the first club in all of CONCACAF to win 30 league titles. Rojas talks about his beginnings as a club president. He talks about how he led a group of business owners to come together and buy the club from Mexican magnate Jorge Vergara. He also discusses his failures as well as the maturing process he underwent as president. There was also a great deal of emotion in his team being able to obtain their 30th league title and their current road to win number 34. For Rojas, he also sees Saprissa as a social project and he discusses at great length what the club’s schools have done for many players whether they get to the first team or not. All that plus his expectations for the World Cup and how Central American countries can begin to threaten MLS and Liga MX in CONCACAF Champions as well as the current obstacles they face in doing so. Brent Sancho

In this episode Juan had the opportunity to interview someone he’s worked alongside as he was joined by former Soca Warrior, politician and current analyst over at Sportsmax, Brent Sancho.

Brent talks in depth about what are the growing pains in the initial stages of the CONCACAF National League. He also gives more insight on some of the issues that have always been present for Caribbean sides in terms of logistics. Brent also discussed the positives of this entire process for the growth of the game in the region.

He also talks about the problems at the youth level in Trinidad & Tobago and how they need to be rectified after the aftermath of the Jack Warner era at that country’s FA.

All this and more as Brent talks Champions League and also goes into some great detail of that night on Couva when Trinidad turned a “meaningless match” into “a must-win” and how the “Wow, we won factor” against the United States wasn’t felt by the players until the following day.

Daguito Valdes

In this episode of Beyond The Pitch, Juan continues his Latinos in Sports Journalism series as he goes to Cuba to talk with analyst, writer and Youtube personality Daguito Valdés. Daguito hosts the most viewed football show and one of the most viewed sports programs in the entire island.

He talks about how he wanted to change the way the game is covered there as well as the history of the game in Cuba. Daguito also talks about his 150km trips from his native Pinar del Río to Havana in order to deliver his shows for distribution in addition to other extensive sacrifices he’s had to make in order to just do his show.

He talks about being a game changer in a business where change is frowned upon and doing the best he can with the resources that he has at his disposal. His never quit attitude and a great team of professionals helped in getting international recognition for a show that started out in a local theater that gathered 200-300 people to talk about the game.

He also goes on to give an extensive analysis of this week’s El Clásico at the Camp Nou. This is a show many (regardless of language) will enjoy and will deem as both entertaining as well as inspirational.
