Welcome back to MJ English.
Today we're going to be taking a deep dive into something that I think a lot of English learners kind of get tripped up on. Um, you know, how to properly greet people in English in different situations.
Yeah.
You know, like meeting someone for the first time or seeing someone you've met before, right?
It can be a little confusing.
It can be.
So, we're going to clear all that up for you guys today. And then we're also going to be talking about a very common mistake that learners make when responding to the phrase, "Nice to meet you."
Yeah. I think this will be a really simple guide that people can use to feel a little bit more confident when they're speaking English.
For sure.
當然。
You know, just getting these little things right can make a big difference.
Absolutely. So, let's jump right into it. Okay, so we have nice to meet you. When do we use this phrase?
首先是 "Nice to meet you"。
Well, nice to meet you is something we say when we're meeting someone for the very first time.
Okay, so you can think of it literally like I'm pleased to make your acquaintance, right? For the first time, right?
Um so, for example, if someone says, "Hi, I'm David." You can say, "Hi, David. Nice to meet you." As simple as that.
例如有人說:「Hi, I'm David.」 Nice to meet you.」
Perfect.
Just like making a new friend.
Exactly. Yeah. Now, what gets interesting is what happens next time you see David?
Exactly.
Right. What if you see David again the next day and you say, "Nice to meet you."
Yeah. It's kind of strange.
It's a little strange, isn't it?
Yeah. Like, have we not met before?
It can almost make the other person feel like you've forgotten them, right? Which is not very polite.
Not the best.
Wait, don't they remember me?
Yeah, exactly.
So, what are some other phrases that we can use to greet someone the second, third, or any subsequent time that we meet them.
Well, there are a lot of great options.
Okay, one is nice to see you again.
像是 "Nice to see you again."
Okay, you could also say good to see you.
Good to see you."
Okay, um if you want to be a little more enthusiastic, you can say, "Hey, David, it's great to see you again."
Hey David, it's great to see you again!"
Right! So, all of these phrases show that you remember meeting them before, right? It's like, "We've met before and I remember you."
Exactly.
Now, what happens if you see someone and you're really not sure if you've met them before?
Yeah. Maybe you recognize them, but you just can't put your finger on it. This happens all the time, right? What do we do then?
Well, in those situations, it's always best to just go with the simple and safe greeting, okay?
Like, hi, hello.
Um, you can also say, "How are you?" or "How's it going?"
你也可以說 "How are you?" 或 "How's it going?"。
Um, these greetings are useful because they don't assume that you've met before, right? So, you don't have to worry about any awkwardness.
Okay, perfect. Now, let's talk about how to respond to nice to meet you, okay? Because I know that there's a common mistake that learners make.
Yeah. And what is that?
It's saying "me too".
Me too."
Ah, which I think comes from directly translating from Chinese.
Oh, I see. But yeah, it's not really the natural way to respond in English.
So, what are some correct ways to respond to nice to meet you?
Well, you can simply say you too.
You too."
Okay, that's very common and natural.
Or you can say nice to meet you too.
Nice to meet you too."
Okay, you can also say likewise.
Ah, which is a little more formal and concise.
And then another option is I look forward to seeing you again.
另外一個選項是 "I look forward to seeing you again."
Oh, that's a nice one, too. A little more polite.
Yeah. So, just to recap really quickly, when meeting someone for the first time, we use nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you."
Right.
對。
After that first meeting, we say nice to see you again or something along those lines.
之後再見面可以說 "Nice to see you again" 或類似的句子。
Yep.
If you're not sure if you've met someone before, just stick with hi or hello.
Exactly.
And when someone says nice to meet you to you, some appropriate responses are You too. Nice to meet you too. Or likewise.
當別人對你說 "Nice to meet you",你可以回 "You too."、"Nice to meet you too." 或 "Likewise."
All good options.
And remember, don't say me too.
Me too."
Don't say me too.
Me too"!
Right. So, yeah, just these simple rules can really help you navigate those, you know, tricky social situations in English.
For sure. And it shows that you're really paying attention to these, you know, small but important parts of the language.
Exactly. And it shows that you're learning. So, pay attention to these things, guys.
