  • Instant Reaction: Nvidia Gets Tepid Reaction to Forecast, Ups Investor Rewards

    Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company, delivered a sales forecast that drew a lukewarm reaction from investors, even as revenue from data center operators continued to surge.Sales in the three months ending in July will be about $91 billion, the company said in a statement late Wednesday.

    Though analysts estimated $87 billion on average, projections ranged as high as $96 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

    - Jennifer Bartashus, Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Analyst, Retail Staples & Packaged Food, recaps Target earnings. Target Corp.'s comparable sales jumped 5.6% last quarter, the biggest increase since the end of 2021 and triple the gain analysts were expecting. The company raised its annual revenue guidance by 2 percentage points to about 4%, but executives warned of tougher comparisons and more cost challenges ahead.

    -Mary Ross Gilbert, Bloomberg Intelligence, Senior Equity Analyst, Covering Retail, discusses TJX Earnings. TJX Cos. raised its sales growth expectations for the year as cautious shoppers spend on lower priced goods at the company's discount chains. The company's comparable sales from its stores and e-commerce sites are now seen expanding as much as 4%, up from previous guidance for an increase of as much as 3%.

    -Drew Reading, Bloomberg Intelligence U.S Homebuilding Analyst, recaps Lowe's earnings. Lowe’s Cos. reported sales growth in the first quarter that just missed estimates, with comparable sales rising 0.6% during the period. The company kept its full-year outlook unchanged, citing productivity boosts from artificial intelligence, and expects to offset higher transportation costs through productivity initiatives.

    -Matthew Schettenhelm, Bloomberg Intelligence Media Litigation Analyst, discusses a jury rejecting Elon Musk's claims that OpenAI betrayed its mission to benefit the public by morphing into a for-profit business, finding that he waited too long to sue the company. The verdict is a major relief for OpenAI as it eyes a potential initial public offering, and Musk and his lawyers have vowed an  appeal.

According to Bloomberg Intelligence: Berkshire Hathaway's first 13F under CEO Greg Abel suggest more willingness to commit to tech stocks than under Warren Buffett, with the purchase of roughly $12.5 billion in Alphabet stock. This is likely to add volatility but add exposure to potential gains from AI and other emerging technologies.

According to BI: A significant majority of market participants expect the Treasury yield curve to steepen as Kevin Warsh takes the helm of the Fed. President Trump has landed in China for the much anticipated summit with Xi where the two are scheduled to meet on Thursday and Friday, arriving at a critical moment for the tech cycle as geopolitics, chip export policy, and surging demand for compute are colliding, making the outcome critical for Nvidia, hyperscalers, and the greater tech ecosystem.

According to BI: At 65%, personal-safety concerns peaked in BI's US travel survey conducted April 17-28 amid the Middle East conflict, US policies towards visas and other geopolitical tensions.     -Lily Meier, Bloomberg Retail Reporter, discusses Under Armour. Shares sank after its guidance for this year missed Wall Street projections, weighed down by exiting a partnership with NBA star Stephen Curry and a financial hit from the conflict in the Middle East. Annual revenue will decline slightly, but it would have been little changed if the company still had the deal with Curry, the sporting-goods maker said Tuesday. Analysts on average projected a gain of about 2%. 

    -Sid Philip, Bloomberg Chief Correspondent for Global Aviation, discusses the Bloomberg Big Take story: “Boeing Bets Comeback on Trump, China and an Elusive New Plane.” Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, must soon decide how to replace the workhorse 737 aircraft, as the company tries to regain public trust after a series of sometimes deadly accidents. He's also trying to land a big sales deal in China, with Trump's help. Both the sale and the new plane will be key to reviving the aerospace giant.

    -- Gautam Mukunda, Lecturer at Yale School of Management and Bloomberg Opinion contributor, discusses his Bloomberg Opinion column: “AI Isn’t Built for Bar Weather’s Black Swan Era.” AI models are matching or outperforming physics-based models in medium-range weather forecasting and are faster and require less computational infrastructure. These models struggle with extrapolating outside their training data, which can lead to failures when they encounter unusual weather patterns.

Bloomberg looks at some of the highlights to his legacy.

President Donald Trump plans to fire Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary, according to a person familiar with the matter.  Repatriation flights of passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak began on Sunday.
