The latest body blow for the Commonwealth Games has renewed debate about its place on the sporting calendar.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee say they're "incredibly disappointed" by the Victorian state government's call to ditch their hosting of the 2026 Comm Games, due to rising costs.

The Commonwealth Games were plagued by similar issues in 2017 when Durban pulled the plug on hosting the 2022 edition, which was eventually picked up by Birmingham.

NZOC chief executive Nicki Nicol says the decision is unsettling for Kiwi athletes - who were working towards a Games so close to home.
