In this inaugural Business Buying Strategies podcast, Jonathan Jay from The Dealmaker's Academy interviews Neville Wright:
Neville Wright has one of the best entrepreneurial stories you'll ever hear.
Neville left school at 16 with no qualifications. He suffered from dyslexia and always hated school because he found it hard to read.
But Neville was not your normal school drop out. Neville was determined to carve his own path.
So Neville started working as a window cleaner. His business quickly expanded into doing small repair jobs.
Neville had a relentless focus on quality that is customers loved. If Neville was repairing brickwork or changing tiles he made sure the new materials matched with what was there before. This surprised his customers who would often as if he had done the work.
Neville opened a small shop selling everything expectant parents would need. Everything from maternity clothes, baby clothes, pushchairs and travel systems and baby furniture.
Neville's little store had 2 competitive advantages. Great prices and great customer service.
For the next 34 years, Neville grew his little shop into the biggest UK nursery retailer. Neville went on to sell Kiddicare for £70 million.
How did he sell a business for £70 million? Why was it critical that Neville not speak to potential buyers? And why did Neville think that 2011 was the right time to sell?
