Isolated heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain may occur also over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Heavy rain is forecast over Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Tiruchirappalli, Salem and Dharmapuri districts.

Cyclone ‘Nivar’ is expected to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday evening. It is approaching for a landfall between Karaikal, Mamallapuram and around Puducherry during midnight and into the small hours of Thursday. Cyclone Nivar would hit a West-North-West track initially before shifting to the North-West to approach for the landfall. The IMD expects it to cross the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry by Wednesday evening as a very severe cyclone with wind speeds of 120-130 km/hr gusting to 145 km/hr.
Global forecasts valid till 4.30 pm on Tuesday showed moderate to heavy rain over Sriharikota, Pulicat, Chennai, Ramapuram, Mamallapuram, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, and Velankanni along the South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Tamil Nadu coasts. Heavier thunderstorms were waiting to strike all along the stretch even as parts of adjoining interior have also started receiving rain.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is predicted over Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts on Tuesday; and over Cuddalore, Kallakkurichi, Puducherry, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu to Ariyalur, Perambalur and Karaikal districts on Wednesday. Over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, a similar outlook is valid for Nellore and Chittoor districts on Wednesday and Thursday and over Telangana on Thursday.
Wind speeds are expected to increase gradually becoming 65-75 km/hr gusting to 85 km/hr over the South-West and adjoining West-Central Bay of Bengal, and 55-65 km/hr gusting to 75 km/hr along and off the Tamil Nadu and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coast and over the Gulf of Mannar from Tuesday morning.
