Cabin Culture

If you've been listening to the podcast for awhile, you likely know I've been doing Cabin Consultations for almost two years now, meeting one-on-one with cabin owners, dreamers and those in the middle of the building process to offer insight and guidance from someone who's been there (a couple times). SO, this holiday season we thought we'd give one away for free, in return for recording it live for the podcast and sharing it with all of you! On this episode we talk about two big areas of cabin ownership: organization systems and marketing. We dig into a bunch of details within each of these two categories to help a new A-Frame owner get started successfully. While focused on her needs, I think these two topics will help any STR owner along their journey 👍🏻

On our last podcast episode we chatted with Mandy Wheeler, owner of U&R Real Estate based in Portland, Maine.  We spent our time on that episode talking all things real estate, in a way that would be helpful for those thinking about purchasing (or building) their first cabin. But on THIS episode we're diving into Mandy's history as a real estate investor. While she started as a realtor, it wasn't long before she started investing her own money into properties, amassing a collection of 8 by the time she was 40. Not your typical real estate investor, Mandy shares with us how she accidentally ended up where she is now, and how this impacts her financial future.

You can't buy or build a cabin without a realtor*, so on today's episode we're getting all the details from my personal favorite realtor Mandy Wheeler. I met Mandy when buying land for Cozy Rock, and she guided us flawlessly through the process of looking for land, inspecting land, and eventually building on that land. So today she's here to answer all your realtor questions, and give you all the Realtor 101 insight and advice you can use to pursue your cabin dreams!

*Okay, technically you can, but we wouldn't recommend it.

Annnnnnd we're back with Part 2 of our conversation with Candice, owner and host behind the Boho Aframe out in California. While last week's episode (Season 2: Episode 19) isn't a prerequisite for this one, it will lay a lot of the foundational groundwork, as this time we just dive right in to more host talk. Thanks for joining us!

On this episode we’re talking to Candice, owner and host of the Boho AFrame in California. While I thought we’d dive into west coast cabin culture, we actually spent almost all of our time talking hosting. I’ve learned over the years that it’s hard to find friends who can related to the weird, urgent, joyful and sometimes stressful life of being an AirBNB host, so Candice and I loved diving into all kinds of hosting topics. So much so that we didn’t even come close to covering it all in this hour long episode. If you’re currently hosting an airbnb, thinking about hosting at an airbnb, a guest at AirBNB’s, or just intrigued to hear more behind-the-scenes talk about hosting, then welcome! You’re in the right spot, and this is DEFINITELY the right episode for you!

On this episode we’re talking to Will Jones, author of 'Cabin: How to Build a Retreat in the Wilderness and Learn to Live with Nature'. I love this opportunity to go a bit deeper with someone who spent over two years living in the world of cabins (not literally, but figuratively). The book he produced is an artistic mix of history and culture with how-to advice and guidance for anyone looking to build their own cabin. Join us as we talk about Will's cabin, the writing of the book, and all things cabin culture.

On this episode we’re talking Melissa, the florist and creative mastermind behind the Tanglebloom Cabin in Brookline Vermont. Melissa originally bought the land as a flower farm, and after growing that business to include weddings and a CSA, she added the Tanglebloom Cabin. Originally built by her husband, in just a couple weeks, for the two of them, launching it on AirBNB turned into an additional revenue stream she didn’t see coming. Seven years later it has grown not only in its popularity, earning the award of one of AirBNB’s most wish-listed properties, but also in what it offers its guests. In this episode we talk about how Melissa has found success in a niche market, and how she has used guest feedback to improve not only the experience but also the yearly revenue.

On this episode we’re talking Lydia & Jarrod Lucca, along with their two daughters Hattie & Alieda. You may remember the ending of our last interview with Pete Long (cabin designer, and the designer behind Cozy Rock) where I asked him ‘What would you like to see more of in the world of cabins and cabin culture?’ His response was more people like Lydia and Jarrod, a couple out of Minnesota who have spent the last two years building their dream cabin from scratch, by themselves, learning a lot of the skills along the way. It’s certainly not their first project as a team, but is their largest to date, and in today’s conversation we talk through a lot of the details from project planning, to budgeting, to how to survive, and maybe even thrive, during a build. Excited to share their story with you today!

On this episode I’m talking with Sara, half of the duo running the incredible Echo Lake Resort, right outside Lumby British Columbia. The resort has existed for 80 years, and Sara and John bought the business back in 2022. What I find fascinating about this conversation, is that learning about the systems and strategies of what is essentially a large scale STR business, there’s a lot to be learned that can help owners run their own business, even if you have only one property. So today we’re diving into all the sexy details of running an AirBNB business, in the context of a gorgeous fishing resort on the west coast of Canada.

We're BACK with Pete Long, one of our favorite past guests and friends, and also the designer of Cozy Rock Cabin. While Episode 1 isn't required to enjoy this one, it is one of my favorites so always worth giving it a listen if you missed it the first time.  You can listen to it here, or watch it here.  As for this episode, it's a bit... different than our usual conversations. During the course of my own build, Pete became not only a valued partner in the process, but also a friend and mentor. I value his perspective deeply, and the day we chatted I (accidentally) ended up dumping some of my own personal thoughts/questions on him, and he was kind enough to entertain me. This conversation was less planned, more organic, and as a result more honest. While I did edit it lightly, it's mostly in its entirety. Thanks for sticking with me, and being part of this more personal conversation.
