Cancelled for Maintenance

In every form of work, there is some form of training. Typically this is done by a mentor or an instructor, but what do you do when there’s neither a trainer nor a budget? Training then becomes a matter of legality from “read & signs” to “death by power point”. On-the-job training is meant to bridge the knowledge gaps left from technical schools. When on-the-job training is left up to a power point slide, is it really about the training, or sending a message?

We are joined today with Cookies and Cream, two aspiring avionics technicians who are currently going through their required technician courses.  Join us as they share some of the experiences of going into the aviation community with zero experience, going through the required courses, and how some of the training gets glossed over to save time.

Their sole mission is to prevent the occurrence of defects. They do the job that no one likes to do but have fun doing it. They are the first ones to bitch you out and make you do all the dumb shit “legally”. They are the most nit-picky, never satisfied, overly dramatic, first to shut down ops and pull your certs. They are Quality Assurance representatives. It ain’t easy being one of the most hated entities in the aviation world, but one thing’s for sure, it ain’t nothing but a QA thing.

In today’s world, it’s all about speed and intensity, however revving the red line and going full throttle will eventually break down even the most committed person. Even the most dedicated routine or process needs a rest day or de-load day. These small breaks and reassessment steps can mean the difference between success and a catastrophic breakdown. When living in the fast lane, sometimes you just have to sloooow it down.

No matter where you are, no matter where you go, there is always some form of hate and animosity between working shifts. One shift or another always half-asses things when they know the oncoming shift is imminent. In such instances, one shift finds a way to fuck over the other. From hiding common items to stacking the hangar in the most inconvenient way, the anger boils deep and always finds a way to get its revenge.

Aviation is a science, science relies on procedures. Ignoring the procedures can lead to disastrous effects, but what happens when the books are wrong? What happens when you have technicians who think they are smarter than the book? Aviation, like religion, has commandments.

At some point you get called to hit the road, be it deployments, road trips, or recovering downed planes in the field. Some of the best and worst times are on the road, in some cases you know nothing but living on the road. From truck stops, crappy hotels, long drives, and even crappier diets, life on the open road isn’t just for truckers.

Nobody likes to do paperwork, its tedious, monotonous, and sometimes take forever to complete. Anyone who’s anyone in aviation will tell you, paperwork means everything, especially when it’s time for an audit. Everyone who’s had to do it, hates their life for it, and especially hates those who can’t do it right. From work history to flights, everything rides on paperwork. Shit aint done, until the paperwork’s done!  With special guest Jasmine, a veteran logs and records chief and a multi-award recipient for records, we recount those times when records are totally screwed up to why paperwork is such an integral part of the aviation industry.  

Technical schools are the gateway to most professional careers. They provide essential information for a trade, as well as an overflowing wellspring of useless knowledge to fill your brain with. From theoretical math you’ll never use, to troubleshooting steps you’ll never be allowed to do, one thing is for sure…you’ll forget everything the moment you leave.

What do you do when you meet things that go bump in the night? Animals do what they want, when they want, and where they want. Snakes, bats, bird strikes, and giant spiders…you never know what you’ll meet in the wild flight line.

Things break, sometimes things break hard, but not all incidents are treated equal. Life isn’t easy being the one to answer for an incident, it’s even worse when you have to answer for it when someone dumps it on your lap. The blame game is on. When it comes to incidents, it’s always homemade.
