Carla Godwin grew up in Nebraska in a conservative Christian household. She settled on Grace Bible College in Omaha knowing there were limited career options for women in that world. While being constantly reminded of the expectations for women, Carla began pushing back against some interpretations of the Bible. But patriarchy and purity culture kept forcing her to question even more of her faith, leading her to join more progressive churches and organizations. Even still, purity culture was ingrained into the heads of the men, highlighting the rift between men and women in christian settings.
I was fortunate enough to meet Carla a the Deconstruction Meetup in Portland, and I am so grateful to call her a friend today. Her story and her perspective are so important for everyone to hear.
We mentioned Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers and Pastor Josh Scott as excellent resources for christians regarding sexuality and a progressive worldview. I think they are also just great resources for everyone.
