Chicks Talking Footy

In the lead up to AFL Grand Final the Chicks caught up with Amanda Farrugia, the Captain of the AFLW GWS team, she recently won the 2019 Mostyn Medal, as the best and fairest award in AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division!

The excitement around the Club is at fever pitch! We even played you a bit of the #bigbigsound

The week has finally arrived, the AFL Grand Final – or footy Christmas as we like to call it.

Fi, Bree and Motty continued the CTF September theme speaking to fans of the competing teams and chatted to Tiger super fan Michelle Clyne AFLW media manager and Amanda Farrugia, Captain of the GWS Giants AFLW team.

And there were footy songs……….and some pretty bad singing from us. Thankfully the fabulous voice of Mike Brady doing Up There Cazaly and One Day in September all but drowned us out.

Have a great Grand Final and may both teams win.

It’s Preliminary Final weekend and Collingwood has reached their 2nd Prelim in 2 years and will face GWS in the Saturday twilight match. The Chicks caught up with Collingwood Assistant Coach, Justin Longmuir to get the run down. We discussed everything from the Inside Out doco to Jordan De Goey’s trip to Germany for surgery.

Four teams remain in the race for the 2019 AFL Premiership. Bree, Bec and Fiona reviewed the Semi finals and were joined on the show by Collingwood FC Assistant coach Justin Longmuir to preview the Collingwood v GWS Giants Saturday twilight game. We kept footy fever going with singer and songwriter Liz Stringer and inspiration of “Believer” Lulu written by Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher.

We love footy songs especially at this time of year. Check out the song in our podcast and on youtube.

Round 1 of the finals is behind us and we are down to 6 teams. Fiona and Motty were joined at the desk by number 7 draft pick Claudie Groves. We kept last weeks supporter theme going and firstly chatted to Wayne Pearn who gave us some Tiger talk, sharing his thoughts on his beloved team and his secret match day outfit too.

Then it was Maree Short who has worked at the Brisbane Lions for 24 years and tossed the coin to start the qualifying final against the Tigers on Saturday night.

There are always lots of highs and lows in footy and this week began with the terribly sad news that the much admired former Saints fullback Danny Frawley had died in a car accident. A champion footballer and it seems an equally champion bloke, RIP Danny.

We all know Santo as one of the team behind the hugely successful Utopia (currently Wed nights on the ABC), Have You Been Paying Attention (Mon nights Channel Ten) and Santo, Sam and Ed’s podcast BUT not everyone knows he is an avid Pies supporter! The Chicks caught up with Santo about Collingwood’s Premiership chances and what it was like growing up around Victoria Park.

This episode of Chicks Talking Footy was dedicated to the supporters! We chatted to Dave Beckett die hard Geelong Supporter (you may have heard him on The Bench), Santo Cilauro one-eyed Pies supporter (television and film writer for Utopia, The D-Generation and Have you Been Paying Attention), and quietly confident Eagles Supporter Kasey Symons (sports writer and PHD in Sport and Social Impact).

Bree, Bec and Fi dissect what was an absolutely thrilling end to the 2019 season! Our Tiger Bree and Bomber Motty are happy (and a little bit smug) about making Finals while Bec is falling apart about her Crows devastating season and Fi and Rachael will be comforting themselves with grand final reruns.

In light of Fiona Patten MP’s (Reason Australia) Bill to stop online trolls towards women like Tayla Harris we played you our discussion from earlier in the season.

The Chicks dissected one of the hardest tipping rounds of the season – 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th game clashes! South Australia must be scratching it’s head wondering what has happened to both their teams.

It’s also footy Christmas for us LGBTIAFL fans! The 4th annual AFL Pride Game is happening this weekend in between Sydney Swans and St Kilda Football Club! We had chats with our dear old friends Sarina Jackson from Rainbow Swans, Mikey Cole from Saints Pride and Lisa Laing from GM of Community at St Kilda Football Club (who broke some exciting news for AFLW and VFLW next year). We also had a cheeky chat to drag performer Joyce Maynge who will be spear heading the game and part of the Guard of Honour at the game.

Fi, Bec and Bree dissected the Round 21 games – basically it involved teams scoring 4 goals or less and a lot of snow! We caught up with Rana Hussain from Richmond Football Club about the Launch of their Diversity Inclusion Plan and celebrated the good feels of footy.
