Around 11pm on December 6, 1991 at the Austin, Texas I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt shop, 17-year-olds Eliza Thomas and Jennifer Harbison had just closed the cash register and, according to some customers who had gotten their frozen yogurt to go near closing time, were waiting on a couple of male customers seated at a booth to leave. The two girls had plans with Jennifer’s younger sister, Sarah, and another friend, Amy (both of whom were also at the yogurt shop waiting for Eliza and Jennifer to finish their shift) to have a sleepover. Instead of a fun-filled night together, however, a call came in concerning a reported fire at the ICBY store. When firefighters responded, they didn't just discover a fire; they also discovered the remains of four young girls. It turned into a case riddled with trials, convictions, and overturned sentences-- a case that still lacks closure..

Rodney Marks was only 32, but he had already earned so much respect as an astrophysicist. And he took his work seriously, signing up for multiple long stints at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, run by the National Science Foundation. A job assignment like this one was not for the faint of heart as it required working more than half a year in darkness and in an environment of such extreme temperatures that even a plane couldn’t land because its fuel would freeze. It also meant months of complete isolation from the outside world; so, when Rodney Marks fell ill, there were limited resources. When he died on May 12, 2000, it would be over five months before his body could be removed from the Antarctic continent and an autopsy performed. A full seven months after Marks passed away, autopsy results revealed the biggest shock of all—he had been poisoned.

Between October 1978 and October 1992, several women were murdered across various states including Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia whose bodies were abandoned along major US highways. What do all these women have in common? Almost all of these murders were of redheaded women. Could the connection between their deaths be a coincidence or the work of one serial killer?

Andrea Knabel was a fixer. She cared about people and wanted desperately to help them. That help took the form of being mothering to her younger sisters, of defending those she called a friend, of reminding people of their own strength when facing tough times, of bringing laughter to brighten the darkest of days. Now it is Andrea who needs the help, as she went missing on August 13th, 2019 in Louisville, Kentucky, after walking to her mother’s house during the early morning hours. Now it’s our turn to show we care by listening to and sharing her story.

Tiffany Valiante had just graduated from high school and was looking forward to attending Mercy College in the fall, where she had been awarded a volleyball scholarship. The night of July 12th, 2015, after a small disagreement with her parents, Tiffany wandered away from her parent’s home, leaving her cell phone behind. Immediately, her family began searching for her. In the early morning hours of July 13th, Tiffany’s uncle approached some police officers working a train accident. It was then that he learned there had been a victim of that accident–a young woman on the tracks who had been hit by the train. It was his niece, Tiffany. Her death was quickly ruled a suicide and the case was closed. However, Tiffany was found shoeless and only partially dressed; her shoes were later discovered some distance away yet her feet were clean. Could her death, instead, have been the result of foul play?
Please consider joining Tiffany’s family in fighting for further investigation into the case by urging the New Jersey Attorney General to reopen the investigation; to do so, please consider signing their change.org petition found here.

With the accolades she had earned in the pageant world alongside her bit roles in increasingly more well-known films, it seemed as though Tammy Lynn Leppert’s career was just about to skyrocket. That is, until something shifted and she began to grow increasingly paranoid— convinced that someone was out to kill her. Feeling that Tammy’s fears were delusions, her family sought help. But those fears soon seemed very real when, on July 6th, 1983, Tammy left home with a friend and never returned.

It was Monday, December 16th, 1974. Henry Bedard, Jr. had gone right after school to buy a final Christmas present for his sister and was on his way home. Several people saw Henry on his walk back, even though he was not taking his normal route home. But he never made it home at all. When a group of young boys playing along the route stumbled upon a wallet and a bottle of perfume, they hid the items so they could return to the spot and get them later. However, when they returned to the spot, they made a far more gruesome discovery.

This bonus episode brings you a swap from our friends at the Body to Burial Podcast. Please consider following their show and, if you enjoy this sample episode, leaving them a five-star review. We'll see you on Thursday, sleuthhounds!!
Body to Burial Show Notes:
We welcome our very first guest, retired Chief, FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit, Gary Noesner.
Noesner worked for the FBI for more than 30 years as an investigator and instructor. As a hostage negotiator, he defused prison riots, government standoffs with right-wing militias, overseas kidnappings, and terrorist embassy takeovers. His career trajectory coincided with many significant events in the evolution of hostage negotiation at the FBI.
In 2010, Noesner released Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator, detailing his time working at the bureau. In the memoir, he wrote about the various standoffs he has been involved in, including Waco – his involvement as a negotiator in this crisis would change the FBI forever.
