Coffee and Cases Podcast

On Valentine’s Day in 1945, in the quaint village of Lower Quinton in Warwickshire, England, 74-year-old Charles Walton was making his way to a field to cut down some weeds. By the time the day ended, it wasn’t love that was on the mind of anyone in the village, however. It was murder-- and a gruesome one at that. Over the years, details have been exaggerated into mythic proportions, because who might have been capable of this heinous of a crime is a question for which we still don’t have an answer.

Michael Chambers-- there are many words to describe him: firefighter, hero, deacon, Papaw, dad, and… victim. He was so present in the lives of all who knew him and then he just disappeared. Was the scene in his garage a clue as to what happened or was it a red herring?

Tammy Jo Alexander had a hostile home life and, once she became a teenager, soon began running away in an attempt to escape the toxicity. She frequently hitchhiked across the country– sometimes with a friend but oftentimes alone. When she left for the final time, no one reported her missing. It wasn’t until 2015, when an old friend began to wonder what ever happened to Tammy Jo, that her family realized that something sinister had happened and filed a report. As a result, law enforcement were finally able to identify New York “Caledonia Jane Doe” as Tammy Jo Alexander. Soon the questions switched from “Where is Tammy Jo?” to “Who would have wanted to harm her?”

Hear clips of Tammy Jo’s voice here.

Cathy Moulton had just experienced a long summer of travel across the country with her family and had returned only days before the start of her junior year at Deering High School in Portland, Maine. On September 24th, 1971, hours before a dance she was excited about attending, she disappeared. In what is now one of Maine’s oldest cold cases, Cathy Moulton’s case is one in which the discovery of clues (and there are many) has spanned decades and countries.

For more information concerning Cathy Moulton’s case, please consider purchasing Det. Kevin Cady’s book on the case from Amazon as it served as the main source for today’s episode. Here is the link for download.

In the early morning hours of April 6, 1986, 4th-grader Anthonette Cayedito along with her two younger sisters settled into bed after their mom returned home and the babysitter left. By the next morning, Anthonette was gone. In a case with potential sightings, a 911 call, and recollections of an early morning visitor to the home, we are hopeful that, with the right information, this case can be solved.

Oklahoma meets Kentucky to talk about a case from Missouri in this crossover episode with Sirens and Coffee & Cases. They dive into the cold disappearance of Suzie Streeter, Sherrill Levitt, and Stacy McCall, dubbed “The Springfield Three”, from Sherrill’s home in June of 1992. Today marks the 31st anniversary of their vanishing in the middle of the night with no signs of struggle, and no sign or reason to leave. We also discuss the case of Sharon Zellers from Florida in 1978 who had the same top suspect.

If you have information on this case, please contact Springfield Police or the FBI. You can leave an anon tip on the FBI website, linked in our sources.

An estimated 400 people go missing each year in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park-- the most visited of all national parks. One such missing person disappeared while standing right beside a group of her peers, only half a mile from the parking lot where her school bus was waiting to load up all the students from the horticulture class from Bearden High School in Knoxville and begin the 50-mile trek back. Did she have an accident? Did she meet with foul play? What happened to Trenny Gibson?

Burned cell phones, an abandoned car, keys left behind, am empty-tanked ATV, and a missing, young mother all add up to a mystery that, five years later, has yet to be solved. Most believe that Samantha Sperry would never have left of her own accord, especially with the strong bond she had with her children and her family-- which leaves only one alternative given the details of this particular case-- foul play. And that’s exactly what the puzzling details seem to indicate at well.

The tragic case of Beverly Lynn Smith’s death is a hard one to wrap your head around, mostly because there have been several confessions (though many argue they were coerced) and many changing recollections of that cold December 9th night in 1974 in Oshawa, Ontario. Which version, if any, that we have heard contains the full truth? The answer to that question alone (along with evidence to back up the answer) is the only way to finally find justice for a heartbroken family who has spent nearly fifty years seeking that truth.
