Jamico Elder was born and raised in Watts during the crack epidemic that ravaged South Los Angeles. Although Jamico had given up on life and had repeated two grades in school, he was fortunate to have a supportive family and participate in a mentorship program for young men. When he did not believe in himself, others did! Without mentorship, Jamico would have fallen into the violence that continues to plague South Los Angeles. He excelled academically, graduating summa cum laude earning degrees from Tuskegee University and Harvard University. He returned to Watts and became a teacher at Markham Middle School and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.Jamico taught in Bedford Stuyvesant and Roxbury as well. He has always developed after-school and mentoring programs for young people from infancy to college. As Jamico would say “from the cradle to calculus.” He went on to bring a STEM education program to students across LAUSD. Due to his efforts, partnering schools have seen dramatic increases in students’ math and science scores.In 2016, Jamico became the Executive Director of Avalon Carver Community Center. Under his leadership, the organization has doubled its size and expanded programs to include an on-site YouthBuild High School, 150-bed transitional age youth shelter, and prevention and education programs reaching vulnerable youth across Los Angeles County. Jamico is committed to ensuring that youth growing up in South Los Angeles have the same opportunities he did.Additonally, Jamico is a Black Belt under Chris Haueter and beloved garage guy known for his technical acumen and dominance on the mats.

This week on the Combat Base Podcast we have a guest! Dylan Bruno is a brown belt under Chris Haueter and an accomplished Hollywood actor, model, and voice actor. You may have seen him in Saving Private Ryan as Toynbe 3rd of the 506, in Narcos as Barry Seal aka McPickle, in Grey's Anatomy, NCIS, Numbers, Magnum PI, Hawaii 5-0, and the list goes on. A wrestler and a scholar who competed in the Jr. Olympics multiple times. He played defensive back for the MIT football team where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. A dedicated father, husband, and friend. He is also an avid skier, spearfisherman, and surfer who works as a commercial diver today.

We talk about wrestling and how the wrestlers mindset helped Dylan go from humble New England beginnings to Hollywood stardom. Many good life lessons and hilarity ensued. Enjoy the show!

Brian is a true mixed martial artist who got his start in traditional martial arts 40 years ago. He is a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Chris Haueter, a Judo black belt, a S.A.W. black belt, a Luta Livre black belt and a Hapkido black belt. Prior to grappling he was a successful competitive Dutch Kickboxer in Southern California. He also trained extensively with legendary catch wrestlers Billy Robinson, Josh Barnett, Erik Paulson, Yoshiaki Fujiwara and Mike Martelle. He is the host of the internationally renowned podcast Level Up Grappling, the Vice President of USA catch wrestling, and the Head Coach of PCI Jiu Jitsu in Mission Viejo, CA.
