Dr. David Zaas joined the Medical University of South Carolina in June 2020 as the Chief Executive Officer for the Charleston Division and the Chief Clinical Officer for MUSC Health. In addition, he is an Professor at the MUSC School of Medicine with a clinical practice in pulmonary medicine and lung transplantation at MUSC.

Dr. Zaas was the President of Duke Raleigh Hospital from 2014-2020. He previously served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Duke Faculty Practice, the Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC). He also served as the Vice-Chair for Clinical Practice in the Department of Medicine at Duke University. Dr. Zaas also formerly served as medical director for Lung Transplantation at Duke. His academic interests have involved both translational and clinical research focused on improving outcomes from lung transplantation including the role of infectious complications after transplant.

Dr. Zaas is a graduate of Yale University in 1994. He completed his medical degree at Northwestern University in 1998 and subsequently did his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was selected as Assistant Chief of Service of the Osler Medical Service in 2002-2003. He completed his fellowship training at Duke in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and then joined the Duke faculty in 2005. Dr. Zaas also completed his Master’s of Business Administration at Duke in 2008.

Richard P. Shannon, MD serves as the

Chief Quality Officer for Duke Health. He is responsible for the overall

direction, leadership and operational management of the quality and safety

programs of Duke Health and provides leadership in strengthening a quality

culture where everyone is engaged and respected.

Shannon received his BA from Princeton University and his MD

from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his

training in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, his cardiovascular

training at Massachusetts General Hospital, and was the Francis Weld Peabody

Fellow and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School before

becoming the Claude R. Joyner Professor of Medicine at Drexel University

College of Medicine.

Tracy Defoe is a Canadian adult education consultant and researcher specializing in workplace learning. She is a proud Kata Geek and a humble lean practitioner.

When her first client, Teleflex Canada, (now Dometic Marine), invited her to help them teach

continuous improvement, she set herself the challenge of taking all the waste out of the ‘push’

lean training they were using. She built the modules of what would become the Canadian

Manufacturers & Exporters program TeamTime™ around questions. When Mike Rother’s

Toyota Kata book came out in 2009, a consultant who saw that like Mike, Tracy was teaching

people to ask questions, study learners, and never give answers, put her in touch with early

kata practitioners in the Pacific Northwest. Since a Kata Meet Up in early 2010, Tracy has been

learning, coaching and sharing her experiences with the Improvement and Coaching Katas.

Tracy’s clients have led her to help them with continuous improvement and culture change,

front-line worker and supervisor skills, strategic planning and executive development. Tracy is

keen on customization and on supporting informal peer-led learning.

Mark Rosenthal has been learning on the front lines of Lean implementation, quality improvement, and leader development in manufacturing, engineering design, service sector and health care for over 30 years.

 His experience includes working on lean and quality systems implementation in companies such as Boeing and Boeing suppliers, Genie Industries, Eastman Kodak and Terex at sites throughout North America, Asia and Europe. His baseline background and training experience was with Toyota-trained teachers in the USA and Japan.

Since becoming a full-time independent consultant in 2011 he has worked with a wide spectrum of organizations ranging from strategic projects for major global corporations, coaching and training small and medium sized businesses down to coaching the owner of a small single-site retail business.

He has a Bachelors from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. Following school he spent 11 years as a Commissioned Officer in the US Army, managing heavy equipment maintenance and logistics operations, in Korea, the US, and Germany (as well as questionable activities such as jumping out of perfectly serviceable aircraft in flight) before joining the private sector.

Gemma started her career studying Mechanical Engineering. She quickly discovered the world of Continuous Improvement and spent 20 years working to improve processes and systems within various manufacturing industries including Automotive, Pharmaceutical, Dairy, Cosmetics & Toiletries, Food, and Medical Devices. She has been a CI Manager numerous times and an Operations Manager running a factory of over 500 people.

Gemma is hugely passionate about Manufacturing and strongly believes in Lean Thinking. She gets such a kick out of coaching and facilitating, especially when she sees the lightbulb switch on in someone's head – when they solve a problem; when they realise they have the power to change; or when they get excited about all the improvements they could make.

Steve is responsible for Gemba Academy's lean coaching and certifications. Prior to Gemba Academy, Steve had a diverse career ranging from being responsible for a large medical device sales territory, plant manager where he leveraged lean methods to drive improvement, and VP Operations at Specialty Silicone Fabricators, where he led the lean efforts of the company. He has served on the western region board of The Association for Manufacturing Excellence and has worked with the Michigan Lean Learning Consortium and the California Central Coast Lean Forum.

Dr. Summers is the Chief Medical Officer of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. In October 2020, Wake Forest Baptist Health formalized a strategic partnership with Charlotte-based Atrium Health to become one of the largest academic health systems in the U.S.

Dr. Summers joined Wake Forest Baptist Health in July of 2010 as a Hospitalist in the Section of General Medicine. By 2012, he was named the first Chief in the Section on Hospital Medicine. In 2014, he was appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer, and in 2018 was promoted to Chief Medical Officer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. As CMO, he holds responsibilities including leadership over the Medical Staff, Advanced Practice Providers, Care Coordination, and the Clinical Documentation Excellence Team.

Dr. Summers career has been defined by the ability to implement new processes quickly and efficiently to improve patient care. He has succeeded in three major academic medical centers making change (East Carolina Health, Mayo Clinic, Atrium Health Wake Forest).

He brings disciplined leadership to bear on complex issues where clinical expertise, strategic thinking, and organizational savvy are essential. As a leader, he uses experience and insight to provide structure, order, and clarity to help make rapid and lasting progress on critical issues.

His work at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health has changed the organization over the last twelve years. Among the many projects, he has implemented at Wake Forest include the following: The Section of Hospital Medicine, The Patient Flow Operations Center, The Inpatient Diabetes Management Service, The Orthopedic/Hospitalist Co-management Service, Bed Geography for all Inpatient services, the Discharge Lounge, the Discharge holding unit, a new ED triage process to maximize throughput, and a transfer process between network hospitals to maximize bed space.

One of Dr. Summers areas of interest is patient flow. His efforts in this area, along with his leadership in Care Coordination and the Physician Advisor Program, have led to one of the lower LOS indexes in the country for academic medical centers.

Dr. Summers earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia and his Medical Degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Active in professional organizations, Dr. Summers currently serves on the AAMC CMOG Steering Committee. He was also named by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2022 as one of the 89 Chief Medical Officers of Hospitals and Health Systems to know.

  Dr. Boissy is a practicing neurologist and global thought leader who was most recently Chief Experience Officer at the Cleveland Clinic. In addition to her duties as Chief Medical Officer for Qualtrics, Dr. Boissy will continue as a neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
