The secret to effective marketing isn't in telling your story.
Many people get caught up in brand storytelling, thinking it's relatable, but it often becomes self-indulgent and exhausting.
No one cares about your story unless it resonates with them.
Sure, it could establish a background of relatedness.
But only when people can see themselves in your story does it occur as exciting and valuable.
It only connects when they see something in your journey that matters to them.
Consider the story of a single mum running her own business who couldn't find a place to work with her child.
Against all odds, she started a coworking space with childcare—a true story our London Coworking Assembly folks know.
This story is relatable because it shows someone who has been where others are and understands their current challenges.
Telling people how great you are and how far you've come doesn't help; it's pontificating.
It has to be about them, not you.
They need to know that joining your community, program, or coworking space will solve their problems and help them thrive.
The key is to focus less on yourself and more on the people you're trying to reach.
The less you talk about yourself and the more you talk about them, the more successful you'll be.
Sharing relatable experiences makes your story meaningful to your audience.
Remember, nobody is interested in hearing about how your grandfather started the company in 1842.
Instead, share stories of real-life struggles and triumphs your audience will relate to.
The secret lies in connecting through deeply resonating experiences, creating a sense of understanding and trust.
