Hi lovely listeners,
Today on Culture Club: Harry Styles stars in a psychological thriller alongside an outrageously good cast, the Oscars are implementing diversity measures, and we chat about the gender reveal party that triggered an out-of-control fire.
Check out the Oscars’ new inclusion requirements here and here’s what one of The Guardian’s critics thinks of them.
We chat about all the drama that has arisen about the live-action remake of Mulan and recommend this episode of ABC’s Stop Everything! podcast.
Jasmine recommends Betches’ Media’s new mini podcast series called ‘Do You Know Who My Dad Is?’. It explores nepotism and the effects it has on media, culture and on our current political system and episode one focuses on influencers.
Maggie recommends Grace O’Neill’s article for The Guardian called, ‘The Bachelor Australia’s diversity problem will be its death knell. Just ask the magazine industry’. It looks at the similarities between both media's lack of diversity.
Our jingle, editing and production is by the lovey India Raine. You can email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram at @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts at @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.
Love,
Maggie and Jasmine xx

Hello Culture Club pals! Happy Tuesday.
In this week’s episode we chat about the news that Oatly has received investment from a less than sustainable company and we ask if brands can ever truly be ethical in our capitalist systems.
We refer to this article by Tammy Gan and this Quartz article about how it’s impossible to lead a totally ethical life.
Maggie mentions Jonathan Safran Foer’s book We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins At Breakfast and Jasmine references Georgia Murray’s article for Refinery29 UK about influencer culture.
This week Jasmine recommends Stan’s latest TV drama, I Hate Suzie, a British series about an actress who has her phone hacked and how her life unravels.
Maggie recommends Amazon Prime’s series Upload. A sci-fi series about a man who chooses his own afterlife after uploading his consciousness into a virtual world.
Maggie also recommends Jasmine’s Artemis article How Social Media Changed the Way I Read Novels (Jasmine didn’t put Maggie up for it, she swears).

Hi friends!
In this week’s episode, we chat about that strawberry dress and the conversation it sparked around fatphobia. We reference this tweet by Rayne Fisher-Quann and quote Amanda Richards for InStyle magazine.
We have a chat with model, activist and creative director Mahalia Handley about her journey into plus-size modeling and how she is speaking out against a fatphobic and racist industry (and making massive change while she’s at it).
Jasmine recommends this Fashion Journal article by Isabelle Sacks about the infamous vulva sheet mask and Maggie recommends Vogue’s YouTube video with congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Hey there pals,
A new report shows just how far we have to go in media diversity, how the Free the Flag campaign is gaining more traction, and is Netflix promoting pedophilia? Welcome to this week’s episode of Culture Club.
Musician, Ziggy Ramo appeared on ABC’s Q+A and questioned whether his presence was performative tokenism and a form of censorship. Majority of AFL clubs showed solidarity with the Free the Flag campaign, spearheaded by Clothing the Gap. Jasmine chatted with Clothing the Gap’s creative officer Sianna Catullo and managing director Laura Thompson back in June about how fashion can be a tool for Indigenous activism.
We talk about the global uproar about Cuties, a film that is set to be released by Netflix. We read from this article by Caz Armstrong and this Guardian article by Caspar Salmon.
Maggie recommends the latest Call Her Daddy podcast episode with Miley Cyrus and Jasmine recommends The Cut’s podcast episode on optimism.
As always, our jingle, editing and production is by India Raine. You can email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram at @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts at @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.
Until next week,

Hey friends,
Maggie and Jasmine haven’t been up to much apart from watching The O.C. – not that we’re complaining.
Fast fashion brand Missguided has released a documentary titled Inside Missguided: Made in Manchester. The glitz and glamour focuses on female empowerment and hustle culture while glaringly ignoring its garment workers.
We read from this Dazed article by Sophie Benson and this Medium article by Leigh Stein.
It follows into our conversation about the death of ‘Girl Boss’ culture. A string of well-loved millennial brands have been under scrutiny this past year – Away, Man Repeller, The Wing and Glossier to name a few.
This week Maggie recommends “Nice White Parents”, a podcast by The New York Times, as well as Do Go On episodes “The Real Lord of the Flies” and “The Miracle in the Andes”.
Jasmine recommends “Hip-Hop’s Arrested Social Development: It’s Time For The Rap Game To Grow Up” by Naima Cochrane for Refinery29. This article explores the themes that Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’ has brought up in society this week.
Our funky jingle, editing and production is by the talented India Raine. You can email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram at @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts at @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.
Sending love,

Hello Culture Clubbers,
How was your week? Maggie appeared on Flex Mami’s podcast and Jasmine retrogressed to her 14-year-old self and bought the new Twilight book (as well as tackling its issue with Indigenous culture).
Today we talk about classism in sustainable fashion. We chat about what time and financial barriers inhibit sustainable or secondhand shopping and why we shouldn’t shame people for purchasing fast fashion out of necessity. Both of us really enjoyed Maeve Kerr-Crowley’s piece on op-shopping as a size 18 in Fashion Journal. We recommend Sisters Studios, Rosa Rosa the Label, A.BCH and Maggie Marilyn as our more affordable ethical options.
Jasmine’s recommendations for this week are the articles “Ellen DeGeneres’ Relatability Crisis” by Michael Shulman and “The problem with the Australian fashion industry’s tendency towards ‘ethnically ambiguous’ models” by oops, our very own Maggie Zhou. Maggie (half) recommends Zadie Smith’s debut novel, White Teeth.

Hey friends,
This week we talk about the flood of black and white #ChallengeAccepted photos on your Instagram feed. We dive into its supposed origins, the Turkey femicides and the impact of performative activism. Light stuff, hey?
Resources we referenced include this Guardian article on the murdering of Turkish women, this New York Times article by Taylor Lorenz, this Instagram thread by @beelzeboobz and @let_women_live.
Every week, we will be recommending our favourite reads, watches, listens and whatever else we are consuming. This week Maggie recommends an episode of Wardrobe Crisis with Clare Press called “Giles Duley – Beyond Fashion Photography” as well as Netflix’s miniseries Hollywood.
Jasmine recommends the novel A Lonely Girl Is A Dangerous Thingby Jessie Tu and points towards this month’s Vogue Australia cover featuring Adut Akech Bior.

A weekly podcast where two 20-something media-slashies chat about pop culture, current affairs, the internet & our lives.
In today’s show, meet your hosts Jasmine Wallis and Maggie Zhou. Sit down, get comfy and get to know more about our pathway to journalism, why we love magazines and how we met.
As we lament over last week’s closure of eight Australian glossies, we turn to what we know is never going to disappear: the magic of storytelling.
Back in May, Genevieve Phelan penned a tear-jerking piece for Fashion Journal. Freelance writer and editor Noelle Faulkner took to Instagram to write a piece commemorating her time spent in print magazines.
Our jingle, editing and production was created by the talented India Raine. You can find us on Instagram at @cultureclubpod or on our personal accounts at @jasmineeskye and @yemagz. Catch ya next week!
