In episode 40, Mandy, Liz and Eric met up this weekend at Beech Mountain Resort in North Carolina to see Sheryl Crow perform at the Beech Mountain Music Festival.

On Tuesday, Liz, Eric and Mandy are meeting back up in Charleston for Russell Laffitte’s sentencing showdown. If all goes according to plan, Liz and Mandy will be live-tweeting from the federal courthouse. 

On today’s episode we talk about the drama leading up to the hearing. We also discuss Cory Fleming’s upcoming sentencing on his single federal charge and why we think California has the right idea on what should happen after an attorney is accused of stealing millions from his clients.

Eric also gives an excellent explanation of the difference between a motion to reconsider versus a motion to amend a judge's order.

The couple was driving away from the happiest day in their lives when a 25-year-old woman, whose BAC was allegedly almost three times the legal limit, plowed into their golf cart.

Later on in the show we dispel some misinformation that’s being reported in the Stephen Smith case and clarify what’s really going on there.

Eric gives us some advice on how to avoid getting overcharged by your attorney. While Liz and I share some tips to get your case championed by reporters to get some well-needed sunshine…

On today’s episode, we started out by talking about a Beaufort woman who allegedly used Sandy Smith and her efforts to get answers about Stephen’s death as a way to defraud people out of money. It’s a really bizarre story but one that unfortunately has become familiar to us in the past two years with people attaching themselves to the Murdaugh case in self-serving ways. But also it reminded us of Alex Murdaugh himself. This woman was able to leverage her power and position in the community as a way to allegedly steal money that was meant to go to people in need or toward causes like Sandy’s. Liz and Mandy's former co-workers Delayna Earley and Mike McCombs investigated this case. You can read more about it on The Island News’ website. 

Liz, Eric and Mandy tackle a number of topics today, including our continued concern over the federal government’s role in the Murdaugh case and whether it’s just a way to contain and manage any investigations into whatever it is that Alex and his co-conspirators were into in the Lowcountry.

Also, Eric shared a bit a news about what he and his law partner plan to do next in their battle with Dick and Jim.

It’s been another week full of twists and turns in the Alex Murdaugh story.

With each new development in this case, we’re getting to see the inner workings of the justice system and how it just simply works better for certain people.

The first plea deal has been struck in Alex Murdaugh’s web of crime and corruption. Former attorney Cory Fleming, who was Murdaugh’s best friend — and godfather to Buster Murdaugh — has agreed to cooperate with the federal government and provide information in exchange for leniency.
