SLAA en Read My World presenteren Current Literary Affairs! Een podcast over de actualiteit door de lens van de literatuur, waarin journalist Gülden Ilmaz in gesprek gaat met schrijvers van over de hele wereld. Hoe beïnvloedt de politieke situatie in hun land hun leven en werk? Waar moeten we het écht over hebben? Urgente gesprekken over angst en hoop, woede en trots, het persoonlijke en het politieke, boeken en kunst.

Sayed Kashua is een Palestijnse journalist, schrijver en scenarist uit Israël. Hij had een column in Ha’aretz en schreef verschillende romans, waaronder Let it Be Morning, waarvan de verfilming in 2021 in Cannes te zien is, en zijn meest recente roman Track Changes. Voor de Israëlische televisie maakte hij de serie Arab Labor, over een Palestijnse familie, en samen met David Simon werkte hij aan een pilot voor HBO. Lange tijd was het zijn missie om de grenzen van de vrijheid van meningsuiting van een Palestijn in Israël te verkennen. In 2014 besloot hij het land te ontvluchten en naar de Verenigde Staten te gaan, waar hij nog altijd woont.

Gülden Ilmaz is journalist. Ze presenteerde het nieuws bij AT5 en werkte o.a. voor De Nieuwe Maan van de NTR en het cultuurprogramma Mondo van de VPRO. Ze leidt regelmatig debatten en presenteert live talkshows over actualiteit, kunst en meer.

Reporter Gülden Ilmaz engages in conversation with writers from all over the world. How do the political circumstances in their country of residence influence their life and work? What are the topics we really should be talking about? CLA brings urgent conversation about fear and hope, outrage and pride, personal and political topics, books and art.

In the first pilot episode you listen to Palestinian author Sayed Kashua. Gülden speaks to him about language and identity, the harsh reality Palestinians have to deal with, and what is left of his hopes for Israel and Palestine.

Sayed Kashua is a Palestinian journalist, writer and screenwriter from Israel. He is known for his columns in Ha’aretz and wrote several novels, among which Let it Be Morning, the film adaptation of which is going to Cannes this year, and his most recent novel Track Changes. For Israelian television he wrote a series about a Palestinian family called Arab Labor, and together with David Simon he is working on a pilot for HBO. For a long time he made it his mission to explore the boundaries of the freedom of speech of Palestinians in Israel. In 2014 he decided to flee the country and move to the United States, where he still lives.
