  • Maria's Said Yes To The Dress
Forget the election, forget Brexit, the biggest thing happening in 2020 is the wedding of our Maria.
It's only a few months until Maria ties the knot with her other half Johnny, and the time has finally come for her to get her wedding dress.
Whether you've been married, or you've gotten all of your wedding knowledge from Say Yes to the Dress, you will know that going shopping for the big day can be incredibly stressful.
Maria spoke to Dermot and Dave this week all about her experience. Despite being initially being put off in the first shop (blood on the dress!), she found everything she wanted and more in Embrace Bridal in Gorey.
Thanks to Yvonne, Maria has found the dress of her dreams and we're all very very excited to see her walking down the aisle.

  • Veganuary: Ireland's Vegan Fast-Food Options Reviewed
    Gregg's have led the way
Ever since the term "Veganuary" shot its way into popularity back in 2014, people across the world people have become more conscious of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, during the month of January each year.
This, added to the rise of more full-time vegans, and the success of Gregg's revolutionary vegan sausage rolls, has encouraged fast food chains to hop on the vegan-friendly trend train and create their own tasty alternatives to meat.
Aoife Walsh, reporter with Independent.ie, chats to Dermot and Dave about the options she has tried in Ireland, and rates them out of 10.
    Burger King’s Rebel Whopper - €5.10           6/10
The Rebel Whopper was launched late last year. Although the Whopper is marketed as “100 pc plant-based”, it’s not suitable for vegans or vegetarians as it’s cooked on the same broiler as their meat patties.

    KFC’s Zero Chicken Burger - €6.70                 8/10
KFC’s Zero Chicken Burger replaces a regular chicken fillet with a Quorn alternative.
The fillet is topped with KFC’s vegan mayonnaise, and has all the Colonel’s regular herbs and spices.

    Boojum’s vegan burrito bowl - €7.65             10/10
Vegan-friendly menu options that can be added to the bowl include sweet potato and lentils, which can be served with vegan sour cream, guacamole and pickled onions.
Boojum also offer Mexican spiced butternut squash and three bean chili as meat alternatives.

And with the likes of Centra, Applegreen and Subway all stepping up their vegan game, now is the perfect time to get into the philosophy.

  • Will The General Election Really Make Any Difference?
The 32nd Dáil has officially been dissolved
After weeks of speculation, the highly anticipated #GE2020 has become a reality a little earlier than expected:
The General Election will be held on Saturday February 8th. I hope the Saturday vote will cause less inconvenience to parents than a weekday, and will make it easier for students and people working away from home to vote. Next stop the Áras to see the President ! #LookForward pic.twitter.com/x0NzkzROKi
    — Leo Varadkar (@LeoVaradkar) January 14, 2020
But now, as the General Election campaign gets underway, what is really going to change this time round?
Dermot and Dave discuss the topic of change with Communicorp Media's Group Political Correspondent, Seán Defoe:
Misplaced my umbrella so I’ll be on @TodayFM shortly dressed as Noni to discuss #GE2020 @DermotTodayFM @DaveTodayFM pic.twitter.com/R0xazdPjHF

  • How To Survive The Windows 7 Apocalypse
Microsoft no longer support this operating system
Chalk it down lads - January 14th 2020 - another historic day in the world of tech as Microsoft cut the cord to Windows 7.
From this day forth, the company will no longer issue security updates for this particular system, meaning users still operating on Windows 7 are more prone to hacking and malware.
There is the option of extended support @€145 or so a pop, so we reckon you get updating ASAP!
But did you know that 33% of all Windows computers still run on Windows 7? No? Well neither did we until Dermot and Dave filled us in with some stats and facts.
They even played a Windows startup sounds quiz and the nostalgia was intense.
R.I.P. 7 - you were one of the good ones.

  • Des Bishop Honours His Late Mother In An Incredible New Comedy Tour
"There's no reason why you wouldn't try to deal with grief in a humorous way"
Des Bishop has just kicked off his new nationwide comedy show, Mia Mamma, which is inspired by his late mother Eileen, who passed away in March 2019.
"It’s a show about motherhood and sacrifice, anxiety and grief, the mistakes you make as a mother and a son and the hard road to forgiveness and finally it’s about loss, grief and the chaos that surrounds it"

On sale now. Check http://www.desbishop.net/tour-dates/ for dates and tickets. Not all venues are on ticketmaster.
A post shared by Des Bishop (@desbishop) on Nov 14, 2019 at 8:22am PST
Speaking on Today FM's Dermot and Dave, Bishop reveals how his mum's death, and the ensuing grief, led  him on a journey of discovery.
Unbelievably, it wasn't until after he took up indoor cycling whilst in Oz that he learned how to deal with these trapped emotions; "I really have done a lot of my grieving while spinning". He has even dedicated a section of his show to it.
He continues by saying; "I'm so cynical about it all...but there is something about breath, and music, and the energy of other human beings that can help you to unload emotion".
it's really strange that we don't talk about death more
    The 44-year-old then applauds Dermot Whelan for sharing the story of his father's death (and the delayed grief involved) and praises Ricky Gervais for highlighting the issue in his dark comedy show After Life;
"I think that's great to share because everyone tries to explain grief but I think grief is one  of the most complicated [emotions], but also one of the least, that you need to describe because it's so personal to each individual"

  • Check Out The Best New Shows On TV This Week
    We're spoilt for choice!
The whole "new year, new you" spiel may be wearing thin by now, but one thing we can guarantee is some great new shows on the box.
Dermot and Dave producer Maria Devereux is a walking TV guide and here's what she reckons we should be watching this week:
Catching a Killer: A Diary from the Grave - Tonight (Monday) @9pm on Channel 4
When elderly teacher Peter Farquhar was found dead at home in the village of Maids Moreton in 2015, it was sad and unexpected, but no one thought it suspicious. But 18 months later, when his neighbour Ann Moore-Martin also fell ill and died, the police decided to look again. They found that Ben Field, a would-be vicar and academic, had recently become part of both of their lives and benefited from their wills. This programme shows that by delving back in time through friends' and loved ones' memories of Peter and Ben's relationship, as well as Peter's diary, the police discovered a story of love and betrayal:

How to Steal Pigs and Influence People - Tuesday @10pm on Channel 4
Controversial documentary following a unique community of established vegan and ex-vegan influencers. Some of them are embarking on an escalating series of daring farmyard heists, others are devoted to their back-bedroom chicken sanctuaries, and some are extreme ex-vegans, now notorious for their jaw-dropping raw-meat-only diet. They enjoy hundreds of thousands of followers and know exactly what it takes to make an impact online.

The Outsider - Tonight @9pm on Sky Atlantic
Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel of the same name, The Outsider is a new drama series that explores the investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy and the mysterious force surrounding the case. The ten-episode series follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11 year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable:

Good Omens - Wednesday @9pm on BBC 2
Angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley are enjoying their lives on Earth and have become firm friends, but their comfortable existence is disrupted when Crowley is summoned by two demons, Hastur and Ligur, and presented with a newborn baby who is the Antichrist. The two friends vow to collaborate to ensure the boy will not bring about the end of the world. Neil Gaiman's adaptation of his and Terry Pratchett's fantasy adventure, starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant:

"This is not an ordinary storm!"
With Storm Brendan causing a wave of orange and red warnings across the country, Dermot and Dave chat to their go-to weather expert, Alan O'Reilly (of @CarlowWeather) for an update.
Alan warns of the seriousness posed by this freak of nature saying; "it's a very unusual weather phenomenon to see such a powerful storm develop so quickly".

  • The Life Audit: A Workbook For A Healthier, Happier You
    Happiness starts NOW
Michelle Moroney, life coach and owner of The Cliffs of Moher Retreat, has been facilitating retreats for over 15 years, and has recognised the desires that connect us all. We want to be happy. We want to feel better. We want to get the most out of life. And we don’t want to feel held back.
To live a whole life we need to flourish mentally, physically and emotionally. But when we are caught in the cycle of day-to-day living, we can easily get stuck and find that while we thrive in some of these areas, in others we are badly organised, unbalanced and in need of review.
This is why Michelle has created The Life Audit; designed to help you take stock of the key areas of your life. By gently offering space to explore, contemplate and create new intentions that are in line with the life you want to live, it will help you move past blockages, and take you from where you are to where you want to be.
The author guides Dermot and Dave through her 12-chapter self-help life manual that takes us through areas like:
    Self reflection
    My Purpose
    Self Development
    Health and Wellness
    Stress and Relaxation
    Finance and career
    Community and Fun
Any amount of time we spend on ourselves is positive
The Life Audit is available online and in all good bookstores.

  • One Of Ireland's Top Cardiologists Guides Us To A Healthier Heart
    He doesn't miss a beat!
According to an 80's hit by Feargal Sharkey, "a good heart these days is hard to find", but with the likes of Dr David Burke about the place, those odds are getting better all the time.
Dr Burke is Consultant Cardiologist and Head of Cardiology at The Beacon Hospital, who joined Dermot and Dave for a very educational #AskMeAnything
Dave answered questions like: "What is like having the pressure of someone's life in your hands?" and "Do you think robotic surgeries are  the way of the future?". He also reveals how you can medically die of "a broken heart".
The single most helpful test to do is the CT cardiac angiogram. That one is probably the one test that will give you a full sign off, or an 'NCT'
When asked what his top 3 tips would be, here's what he said:
Everything in moderation - avoid fads like quick weight loss/diets
Keep check - blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, heart trouble in the family
Listen to your body - "the best test of yourself IS yourself"
