  • Is The Irish Government Planning To Introduce Bedroom Tax?
Could people be taxed on their home's "spare" bedrooms in the future?
Just when you thought Ireland's housing crisis couldn't get any more absurd, the Government says "hold my beer".
Under the watchful eye of Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy, the Department of Housing teamed up with the ESRI (Economic and Social Research Institute) to carry out a survey on 1,200 over 55's, asking them if they would consider downsizing to make their "empty homes" available to others.
Murphy has rejected claims this was a tester for bedroom tax, where homeowners of a certain age would be taxed per each of the unused rooms in their house. But there's no smoke without fire.
Dermot and Dave discuss this preposterous suggestion and hear listener's opinions on the matter. There wasn't one vote in favour of it.
You couldn't make it up lads!

  • Dermot Whelan Gets Catfished
Introducing 'dermot log' & 'Dermot J Whelan'
Catfishing first entered the lexicon back in 2010 or so, and really came to the fore thanks to Catfish: The TV Show, which burst onto our screens in 2012.
If you're unfamiliar with the term, it means to lure someone into a relationship (or otherwise) with a fake online persona.
It's something that happens quite regularly on social media, as Dermot Whelan recently discovered:

I've been catfished! Apparently I sell hash. Who knew?? And clearly I'm not afraid of showing it as I stand on my canabis patch with my pitchfork. #jobsatisfaction
A post shared by Dermot Whelan (@dermottodayfm) on Nov 13, 2019 at 1:28am PST
As if that wasn't bad enough, he then found a 'Dermot J Whelan' on Facebook, who was again using pictures of the Limerick man mixed with more pictures of weed/marijuana/gange...call it what you will.
We weren't quick enough to get a snap of the Facebook imposter's page as it was taken down immediately after being rumbled.
The lads explore the occurrences and hear some of our listener's catfish stories.

  • Meet The Lady Behind One Of Facebook's Juiciest Groups
'Ma's On A Mission' has almost 100,00 female members
Suzanne Burke runs the non-profit Ma's On A Mission page on Facebook. It has almost 100k female members who talk about everything from kids to strange rashes to relationship problems and anything else you could possibly think of.
If you're looking for a "fun but crazy place to vent and chat, ask advice, seek support and have the craic", then this is the place!
Contrary to what the name suggests, it is NOT a mothers group, and may not be for everyone (especially if you're easily offended) as it has many different opinions and strong language.
However it is a very large group and therefore they have rules in place and ask that you please read these before joining. They do not allow bullying, naming and shaming, racist or homophobic comments. Advertising of businesses, pages, groups etc. is not allowed by members and will result in blocking.
The thing is, it's soooo juicy!
Suzanne chats to Today FM's Dermot and Dave about her creation and reveals what it's like policing such a dynamic platform with only a team of 8.
on average we get between 150,000 & 200,000 comments per week
She also reveals the extent some fellas have gone to, to try and infiltrate the group, and asks for help for their Xmas Toy Appeal, which aims to aid over 100 charities in Ireland provide toys for struggling families this Christmas:

  • Check Out This New Irish App That Hikers Will Love
Your personal toolkit for multi-day hiking trails, GPS and offline maps
Hiking is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities, yet many of us still haven't gotten in on the trend.
One of the main reasons (bar the unpredictable Irish weather) is the hassle of it all. "What trial should I do?","How long will it take?" and "What if we get stranded along the way?" are the kind of questions people asks themselves.
Well fret no more my outdoor-loving friend, Hiiker is here.
Hiiker is a new Irish app that helps users discover amazing multi-day hiking adventures worldwide:
Founded by web developer Paul Finlay, this is a new way to plot epic hiking trips, even if you're offline.
Paul chats to Dermot and Dave about the benefits of hiking and why his app makes trekking a walk in the park.
