  • So That's Why Zebras Have Stripes!
How have we never spotted this before?
Dave Moore threw on his Safari gear to delve into the serengeti for Dave's World.
Today's factoid was based on a question I've often pondered but never actually looked up - "Why do zebras have stripes?".
It's a defence mechanism that wards away biting insects. The colour combination and pattern confuses insect motion detection systems that control whether flies approach or land on the striped equids.
What's even more impressive is the Japanese research that went into finding this out. Pure genius!
Dave also plays a death metal version of this:
    ...and he loves it.

  • Hector's New TG4 Series Brings Us A “Different Slice” Of America
'Hector USA Ó Chósta go Cósta' takes us on an eye-opening 5,000km trip from Georgia to San Diego
Hector Ó hEochagáin - what a man! Whether it's Siberia, South America or Spiddal, the Navan native captivates us along his travels as he searches for real life stories from across the globe.
In his latest project, the modern-day seanchaí takes us on a trip Down South, waayyyy south:
Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona & California. From guns to bibles we saw it all! #HectorUSA Ó Chósta go Cósta starts Thursday 9.30pm on TG4. pic.twitter.com/OhDhX1GKlc
    — Hector (@hectorirl) October 19, 2019
    Episode 1:
The road trip begins in Georgia as Hector takes to the waters with Captain Charlie Phillips. He links up with Sheriff Larry Dean to get the lowdown on how safe Georgia is before meeting up with former marine, Chris Hill and the Georgia Security Force III%. He’ll be singing with the Gospel Choir in Martin Luther King’s Church before taking a spin in General Lee as he revisits his young days of the Dukes of Hazard. From guns to racism to high school sports he gets his first taste of America on his epic journey (TG4)
Speaking on Today FM's Dermot and Dave, Hector says, "I wanna show people a different slice of America...it's a million miles from Central Park. It's another world".
I get a vibe and an energy off everyday things and everyday people. Communication by humans goes an awful long way
It's this ethos that allows Ó hEochagáin to break down barriers and get the best from his interviewees.
The documentary-maker also tells us about a $20 million crowdfunded wall built to keep Trump out of El Paso, what it was like chatting to first female African-American judge in Alabama and just how loved the Irish are there.
Hector USA Ó Chósta go Cósta kicks off tonight (October 24th) @9:30pm on TG4. It's an eight-parter that runs every Thursday up to mid December, so think of it as an early Christmas pressie from Hector.
We've lots of grá for the man and can't wait to watch his journey.

  • The Pros & Cons Of Switching From iPhone To Android
Lifelong iPhoner Dermot Whelan has made the change...and loves it!
It’s one of the most important, divisive questions our society faces today - "Are you Android or iPhone?".
iOS users tend to snub their noses at us free-spirited, fun-loving Androids (I've never delved into the Apple world), whereas Android users are kinda meh about the more sophisticated iPhone way of life.
Dermot and Dave co-host Dermot Whelan decided to make the blasphemous crossover after he was given a Google Pixel 4 XL to try out.
He's only had it a couple of days but is already loving what it has to offer:

All my meditation training has basically been preparing me for the potential terror of switching from iPhone to Android. So they gave me this for a week to ease my fear of commitment. #Pixel4
A post shared by Dermot Whelan (@dermottodayfm) on Oct 21, 2019 at 11:19am PDT
Today FM's Tech Engineer, Paul Bonass popped into studio to chat to the lads about the pros and the cons to each side of the smartphone divide, but himself and Dave are such Apple-worshippers that they may as well change their surnames to 'Jobs'.
Speaking of his former love (iPhone), Dermo says, "I have realised that we have been sold a complete dog for ages".
But will the newfound augmented reality and transcription recorder apps be enough to win him over in the long run?

  • What Movies Do You Think Should Be On the Leaving Cert Syllabus?
Shakespeare isn't everyone's cup of tea
Dermot and Dave had some good news for fun-loving Irish students when they informed us that the movie Trading Places is to feature on the Leaving Certificate English syllabus.
The 1984 classic centres around a snobbish investor (Dan Aykroyd) and a wily street con artist (Eddie Murphy) who find their positions reversed as part of a bet by two callous millionaires:
Comedian Jim Elliott educates us on the reasons this is such a great film to study and the lads take a look at other movies that would fit the bill.
Dermot would give anything to get this on the curriculum. Leslie Nielsen - what a ledge:

Elliott describes the Leaving Cert, as "hilariously brutal", and he's not wrong!

  • LEGO® Replay: Lego's New Pilot Programme Lets You Donate Unloved Bricks To Charity
    We love you Lego!
The Lego Company are trialling a pilot scheme in the United States called LEGO® Replay, where people can donate their old Lego bricks to non-profits that work with children. The effort is a collaboration with Give Back Box, Teach For America, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.
Once the pilot is complete in spring 2020, the team will evaluate a possible expansion of the program for the rest of the world.
The process is simple: all people have to do is collect any loose LEGO bricks, sets, or elements, place them into a cardboard box, and visit www.lego.com/replay to print out a free UPS shipping label. The package will be sent to the Give Back Box facility, where each brick will be sorted, inspected by hand, and given a rigorous cleaning.
This process is possible because LEGO bricks are made from high-quality, durable materials, designed to be used for generations.
Imagine this in Ireland? We're huge fans of those beautiful bricks, so the sooner the better. Well done you yellow-head-making-magicians.
Dave's World also introduces us to the world's loudest bird - the Amazon's white bellbird.
It has shattered the record for the loudest call ever recorded, reaching the same volume as a pneumatic drill or chainsaw . The white bellbird, which lives in the mountains of the north-eastern Amazon, was recorded at 125 decibels, which can be harmful to humans and animals. A chainsaw is about 120dB.

  • Irish Water UPDATE: "We have the boiled water notice on for a minimum of another day, if not two"
Following a technical issue at a water treatment in Leixlip, which caused untreated water to get into the network, 600,000 people across Dublin, Kildare and Meath are being told to boil their drinking water.
The Boil Notice applies to parts of Fingal, areas in Dublin City Council, parts of South Dublin County Council, parts of Kildare and Dunboyne in Meath.
A detailed map of affected areas is available here.
Yvonne Harris, Director and Head of Customer Relations at Irish Water, updates Dermot and Dave on what actions the company are taking to ensure the issue is resolved as quickly as possible.
We're working with the HSE and EPA at the moment...one of the challenges is that we need the water at the extremities to have flushed through the network before we can lift the boiled water notices
Harris also offers this advice: "personal hygiene is all perfect, the only thing I would caution is your child in the bath".
Here are some tips from the Irish Water website:
What you should use cooled boiled water for
    Drinking
    Drinks made with water
Preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked before eating
    Brushing of teeth or gargling
Making ice - discard existing ice cubes and make ice from cooled boiled water
Filtered water - pour out any filtered water in fridges and use cooled boiled water
What you do not need cooled boiled water for
Personal hygiene, such as showering and bathing
    Toilet flushing
For more information, go to the Irish Water website www.water.ie or keep up to date on their twitter by clicking here.

  • Is This The Best Candy Crush Player In Ireland?
Level 5,539 has to be an Irish record!?
Candy Crush...the eater of time and breaker of dreams.
It's one of the most popular mobile games of all time and is highly addictive (so I hear), but what's all the fuss about?
As Dermot and Dave producer Maria Devereux revealed she was on level 806, listeners were quick to get in touch and brag about their jedi-like abilities on the colourful free-play board.
We soon find out there's nothing too "free" about it for certain users.
But Candy Crushers do learn a secret hack that will earn them extra lives.

  • Andrew Maxwell Chats Quarter-Life Crisis, Jackfruit Burgers & Brexit
He's all set for Galway's Vodafone Comedy Carnival
Dermot and Dave have a long overdue chat with their buddy Andrew Maxwell ahead of his Comedy Carnival gigs at the weekend, where they also took the chance to compare their "quarter-life crisis" stories.
For Dave, it's lap blankets, whereas Andrew has taken up cycling, but it's Dermot's vintage sports car enthusiasm that just pips them at the post.
Maxwell also offers his very knowledgeable insight into Brexit.
You can catch the Dubliner at the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway this Saturday and Sunday (26th & 27th of October). Dates and tickets can be found here.

  • Bernard O'Shea Proves His Wife Is Married To A Feckin' Eejit
The Laois comedian reveals the inspiration behind his hilarious new book
Many authors spend a lifetime trying to get their work published, but for Bernard O'Shea it kinda fell into his lap, with the help of his wife Lorna ("behind every good man..." and all that).
Gill Books were keen to work with the funnyman but he had zero ideas when it came to putting pen to paper. That was until he mentioned a couple of unusual stories about his family life.
He owes his life to his long-suffering wife, Lorna, who has nicknamed him ‘The Feckin’ Eejit’ because of the ongoing crises he puts her and their three small children through almost every day.
Unbeknownst to Bernard, Lorna had been cataloguing each of her hubby's amazing mishaps, which became the perfect material for his first publication, My Wife Is Married to a Feckin' Eejit.
I went home and she says "here's the list of the stupid, idiotic things you've done and she had like 27 or 28 "

The 40-year-old chats to Dermot and Dave about some of these anecdotes and ‘The Great Dishwasher Row of 2009’ is definitely our favourite.
He also explains why buying your loved one a vacuum cleaner is never a good idea and why he was destined to remain ginger for life.
My Wife Is Married to a Feckin' Eejit is out right now and you can catch Bernard at the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway this Friday and Saturday (25th & 26th of October). Dates and tickets can be found here.
