  • The Dáil Chamber's Voting System Explained
    40% of TDs have their buttons pressed by other politicians on a regular basis
    OK, so we know Fianna Fáil's Lisa Chambers and Niall Collins pressed the wrong buttons whilst voting in the Dáil chamber.
    Lisa claims to have pushed Dara Calleary's button by accident, whereas Niall voted on behalf of Timmy Dooley SIX times on Thursday. Neither Calleary or Dooley were in the room at the time.
    Mr Collins and Mr Dooley have since stepped-down from the frontbench and Ms Chambers is under investigation.
    But how can this happen? How in the name of Miggeldy Higgins can our politicians be so blasé about decision-making?
    Dermot and Dave chat to Today FM's Political Correspondent, Seán Defoe, about the process involved.
    He say;
    "In the Dáil chamber, usually every week, whenever there's a division or a challenge put down in the Dáil, they save up all the votes til Thursday afternoon and they all come in and do about an hour, and hour 20 minutes of block voting so everything that could get voted on gets done in one chunk".
    Defoe's research reveals that 40% of TDs have their buttons pressed by other politicians on a regular basis and even more surprisingly, a lot say, "sometimes you forget to vote because you only have 60 seconds".
    That doesn't sound good enough to us. Surely a better system is needed?

  • Jack Whitehall Chats About Couple Caught Having Sex During His Comedy Show
    Talk about going out with a bang!
    We're huge fans of Jack Whitehall here in Today FM HQ. I mean, anyone who can fill the enchanting boots of Graham Norton so seamlessly is top notch in our books.
    While his hosting skills are on fleek, he's better known in the world of acting an stand-up comedy, and has an incredible story about a randy couple who couldn't hold back during one of his shows.
    OH MY GOD. I have just been informed that during the recording of my christmas show with my father at The London Palladium a couple were kicked out of the theatre for having sex during the show.

    The British Tribe Next Door - Tuesday @9:15pm on Channel 4

They are to stay in Otjeme village, home to 100 semi-nomadic Himba cattle herders, who choose to live very traditional lives, but are overwhelmed by what their first impressions. The first Himba visitors arrive at the house - including Kandisiko, who quickly strikes up a friendship with Scarlett.

    The Accident - Thursday @9pm on Channel 4
    A group of teenagers in a Welsh town break into a construction site to make mischief, only for an explosion to claim the lives of several of the children. Sarah Lancashire, Joanna Scanlan and Mark Lewis Jones star:

    And Maria's Movies of the Week are both on Netflix. One is good, the other...woeful!

  • Picky Eating Uncovered: How To Get Kids To Try New Foods
    "Picky eaters don't do it on purpose to annoy you"
    I think it's fair to say we all know a fussy eater - that is of course if you aren't one yourself?
    But where does it all stem from?
    Well that's exactly what food expert, and founder of eatwell.ie, Sarah Keogh wanted to explore. And it ain't just the kiddies.
    Speaking on Dermot and Dave, the dietitian and nutritionist says we need to nip this at the bud for, "a lot of fussy eating children grow up to be fussy eating adults".
    Like a lot of our other habits and dispositions, the dislike of certain foods comes at an early age. But have you ever heard of the term 'neophobic'? This means 'the fear of anything new', and as we hit the age of 18 months this survival technique (of sorts) kicks in, as revealed by Sarah.
    The common age for it to kick in is usually around the age of 2, but it peaks around the age of 6
    Texture is the main part of the fear, and the older we get, the more awkward it can become - manifesting itself into a social issue.
    Sarah's trick is simple, "take a Euro coin-size piece of whatever food it is and do that every 2 to 3 days for a month". Exposure is key!
    And don't sweat it if at first you don't succeed. It can take up to five tries to actually like a new food.
    It could also be a case that you're a 'supertaster', which 20% or so of us are. And before you ask - here's what that means, "they have x5 times more taste buds on their tongues to anyone else, so things genuinely taste stronger - particularly bitter flavours and sour flavours".
    For more queries, check out eatwell.ie
    Every Monday, we dedicate a section of the show called Mind Yourself Now to help our listeners with their body, soul and mind.

  • Picture This EXCLUSIVE: New Song, New Album & Massive Irish Gigs In 2020
    The Athy lads chat to Dermot and Dave about the next chapter in their phenomenal story
    Over the past week, Picture This fans have been all a flutter after the band teased new track 'One Night' across their social channels.
    Thankfully, they didn't have long to wait as it was dropped at midnight on Thursday:

    But that wasn't all the lads had up their artistic sleeves;
    1 year ago today we released One Drink and announced our album and 5 night stand at the 3 Arena. Wow that has flown by.
    Tonight at midnight we bring out our new song One Night and a new chapter begins. Let’s gooooooo.
    — Ryan Hennessy (@RyanHennessy__) October 17, 2019
    Dermot and Dave caught up with Ryan Hennessy and Jimmy Rainsford to chat about their latest song and find out what's next for Athy's finest. And to be honest, we weren't prepared for what they were about to tell us.
    Not only did they reveal that their 5th album is in the can, they also shocked us with news of a 6th album ready to rock and 3 massive Irish gigs next summer;

    IRELAND. SUMMER 2020. ON SALE THURSDAY 9AM.
    A post shared by Picture This (@bandpicturethis) on Oct 18, 2019 at 1:00am PDT
    Speaking about how serious they are about their music, Ryan says;
    we create absolutely everything. Like Jimmy engineers, records and produces the songs, I write every lyric, every melody, and even down as far as creating artwork
    Jimmy laughs saying, "we were gonna release two albums this month", only to be told by their label that they needed to calm down.
    "A lot of songs on this album were just like "let's do it", or recorded there and then and that's the final version", he continues.
    There's also a great story about the way decided to "wind down" after their 5-night 3Arena run. Let's just say a few beers were involved.
    We've been with Ryan and Jimmy every step of the way and we're very excited for what's to come.
    Three years ago, we told you to remember their name:

  • Maria Devereux Tracks Down Her New Zealand Namesake
    The story of how a wrong email address led the Dermot and Dave producer to finding a new bestie in the southern hemisphere
    Something strange had been happening with Maria Devereux's e-mails of late.
    The Dermot and Dave producer was receiving reminders to get her car serviced and collect some furniture and although these may not seem that peculiar, they were from companies in New Zealand.
    Being the master of research she is, Maria did some snooping and discovered a website called mariadevereux.com What are the odds?
    She contacted her namesake and it was then that the pieces of the puzzle finally fitted together.
    A serendipitous story like this needed to be heard, so the show gave NZ Maria a call to find out more about the Advertising Creative Director down unda.
    Listeners also gave us a good laugh with their "name twin" anecdotes.
