  • New Hard-Hitting Irish Play 'The Examination' Opens Our Eyes To Prison Life
"I’d like the people sitting in the theatre watching this not to see us as animals in a cage, but as human beings"
Above is the opening line from an incredible play coming to Dublin this week.
'The Examination' is a documentary performance work exploring mental health and human rights in the prison system in the UK and Ireland that originally debuted in March and made an appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe last month.
Based on historical research and interviews with current life-sentence serving prisoners and performed by stand-up comedian and former prisoner Willie White.
'An eye for an eye just leaves everybody blind'.

  • PSD2 Explained - Online Payments Will Never Be the Same Again
PSD2 may sound like a character from a Star Wars movie but I can assure you there's nothing fictional about this new rule.
The acronym stands for the Second Payment Services Directive, which is a continuation from the original payment service directive (PSD1) that came into force in 2007.
This revised law comes into effect on September 14th, aiming to secure e-payments and expand the financial services ecosystem.
But what does this mean for banks, businesses and customers?
Silicone Republic's Eva Short explores the directive on Today FM's Dermot and Dave, explaining how the new system requires a much tougher authentication process that includes, "something you know, something you have and something you are".

  • Bill Skarsgard Reveals How 'Pennywise' Entered His Dreams After Filming Was Over
"I had a weird kind of departure from the character"
Back in 2017, director Andrés Muschietti released the first installment of his chilling adaptation of Stephen King's 1986 novel It - a movie that took in $700m at the box office, making it the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
Bill Skarsgard's incredible performance as the iconic clown Pennywise was a massive factor in the film's success and now he's back in IT Chapter Two, which Muchietti describes as "scarier, visually bigger, and more emotional, but most importantly is about the human experience".
In the sleepy town of Derry, the evil clown Pennywise returns 27 years later to torment the grown-up members of the Losers' Club, who have long since drifted apart from one another.
Big names such as James McEvoy, Jessica Chastain and Bill Hader also star in the sequel, and it looks absolutely terrifying:
He’s waited 27 years. Watch the new trailer now.

Today FM's Dave Moore caught up with the the 'Lost Without You' singer during his Sound Garden set at EP on Saturday afternoon and she was buzzing.
The 25-year-old admits to using the power of the mind to make Hozier happen, "I made like a vision board two years ago and that was on it. It's so lame. That's like totally my dream - he's everything".
You truly were electric yesterday Ireland

  • How To Restore Your Self Esteem & Believe In Yourself Again
No matter how positive a person is, we all suffer from a lack of confidence at some point(s) in our lives - it's natural. But what if this becomes and overwhelming emotional state? How do we correct it?
One lady who experienced a serious lack of self-esteem is life coach Tracy Geraghty.
Years ago, Tracy hit a rough patch when a chain of events turned her life upside down; her mum died, her son was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and her marriage fell apart, all in a short space of time.
And although Tracy knew she had an intolerance for the substance, she used alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Ms Geraghty tells Dermot and Dave her inspirational story and how reading Rhonda Byrne's best-selling self-help book 'The Secret' transformed her life.
Tracy says, "I realised that at the core I didn't value myself enough...so I started to invest in my personal development".
When we place a low value on ourselves it's very hard to ask for anything more because (you think) this is a good as it gets for me
She continues to explain how we need to stop placing "far too much of our deepest, inner worth on things that are outside of us".

  • Gripping Harvey Weinstein Documentary Airs On BBC2 This Weekend
Untouchable: The Rise and Fall of Harvey Weinstein
On October 10th, 2017, The New Yorker magazine published an article titled, From Aggressive Overtures to Sexual Assault: Harvey Weinstein’s Accusers Tell Their Stories - a publication that would change the face of the entertainment industry forever.
During the course of a ten-month investigation, thirteen women interviewed shared harrowing accounts saying that, between the 1990's and 2015, Weinstein sexually harassed or assaulted them.
Days later, the #MeToo hashtag went viral across social media in what was only the tip of the sexual assault iceberg.
This Sunday, September 1st @9pm, BBC2 will air their feature-length documentary which they describe as:
'A modern parable for our times and future generations - the inside story of the spectacular rise and fall of movie titan Harvey Weinstein, revealing how he acquired and deployed his power over decades'

Maria's Telly also takes a look at the new series Britain's Got Talent: The Champions and a new Netflix movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Price.
Behind Vatican walls, the traditionalist Pope Benedict (Hopkins) and the reformist future Pope Francis (Pruce) must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church:

  • 17-Year-Old Roscommon Student Wins 'Cadbury Inventor' Competition
    Choca-lattes all round!
Back in July, Dermot and Dave spoke with Roscommon teen Callum Clogher after he was selected as 1 of the 3 finalists in the Cadbury Inventor competition.
The 'Go Madbury For Cadbury' campaign began last year, when the world-famous confectionary company invited creative chocoholics from Ireland and the UK to invent a new chocolate bar.

The 17-year-old's creation was the Choca-latte - a mix of coffee cream and vanilla sandwiched in between Dairy Milk chocolate.
He was up against 25-year-old Neelam from Leeds and her Simply the Zest bar, which was orange flavoured chocolate with caramel and biscuit, alongside Dairy Milk Chocolate.
And Melanie's Raspberry Shortcake. The 44-year-old teacher from Manchester came up with a bar containing raspberries, white chocolate and shortcake surrounded by Dairy Milk.

The three limited edition bars were made available from June 1st to August 31st, with the winner's fusion hitting the shelves on September 1st (this Sunday) for a full year.
Having had one of each, I think they should all be in production. They're class! But only one could prevail.
Callum popped into Today FM studios for a catch up with Dermot and Dave after he was announced the overall winner.
When the competition came out I was like 'ah ya, there's a chance'. A lot of people seemed to like it
He chats about his prize (a year's supply of chocolate and £1,000 voucher) and how the experience has shaped what college course he would like to do.
I think something in business. With the whole campaign and marketing and advertising and just seeing how the whole thing works. I really enjoyed it.
You've done the country proud Callum!!

  • How To Protect Your Kids From The Dangers Of Smartphones
As children head back to school and the winter evenings come in and screens become more of a hassle for parents than ever before, the eternal struggle over screen time will feature in most homes around the country.
    via GIPHY
Adrian Weckler, tech editor from the Irish and Sunday Independent, spoke to Dermot and Dave on Today FM this morning about how you can stay one step ahead of your kids when it comes to tech.
So whether you have a child who needs an iPad for school or uses the computer for homework, check out Adrian's tips for tech safety and piece of mind.
Invest in software to monitor and filter kids phones-Adrian recommended phone and laptop filters like Net Nanny, Cyber Sitter and Pure Sight. You can also disable internet browsers and specific apps through the password-protected restrictions in settings and remotely control the amount of time that your kids use the phone for through features like Screen Time.
Consider a feature phone instead of a smart-phone-Phones like the Nokia 88110 in particular, they have internet access and a camera but not the ability to download apps so there'll be no battles about Instagram or Snapchat.
Don't worry too much about getting the latest iPad-If your school requires an iPad, Adrian has suggested that you can likely ignore technical requirements that often aren't needed.
Try to get more educated about social media apps-Parents should take some time to get familiar with the newest and most popular social media apps so they can discuss them properly with children. Think apps like TikTok or Snapchat as opposed to Twitter and Facebook.
Keep an eye on photo-based apps-be mindful of the impact they have on the self-esteem of kids.
While you might not be able to stop the rows, you might be able to avoid some of the dangers that are involved in the digital world.
