In Farmchat Andrew and Webby look ahead to harvest and what social distancing arrangements will be necessary to keep everyone safe.  There’s a long-awaited update on Webby’s nappy changing prowess and some fact-checking of Joe’s comments about pork in last week’s podcast.

  • 87 – Andrew, Ian & Josh - Weather & Drought

We start as always with Andrew and the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 25th May 2020.

In Farmchat Andrew, Ian and Josh are excited to have received a letter from Simon in Yorkshire which sparks a conversation on futures. Soon they are back on to the old favourite subject of the weather, possibility of droughts which have already started, how crops are looking and when harvest might be. They discuss the impact of no agricultural events this year and quickly drown their sorrows in beer whilst discussing the movement of Londoners and how they might be buying up Norfolk houses soon.

Our beers this week - yes beers as they have one each - are Tribute from St Austell's brewery 4.2% and Yankee Original Pale Ale 4.3% from Yorkshire Rooster's Brewery and Hiver the honey beer 4.5%.

  • 86 – Andrew, Ben & Joe – The Agricultural Bill

We start as always with Andrew and the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 18th May 2020.

In Farmchat Andrew Ben and Joe have an impassioned discussion about the Agricultural Bill which was voted through in Parliament without the amendment to protect UK farmers from low-standard food imports. Described by Andrew as “a terrible moment for UK farming”, this is an issue we’ve had previously on the podcast. Ben gives us a history lesson on the Corn Laws (1815-1846) and the boys consider the future of food security if we become dependent upon imports from countries ruled by the likes of Bolsonaro and Putin.

Our beer this week is a local one: Wally’s Revenge 4% from The Why Not Brewery in Norwich.  It goes down well and prompts an anecdote from Andrew about a boys’ jolly in Magaluf back in the day.

  • 85 – Andrew & Webby – Good Year For The Roses

We set off this new episode with our usual market report from Andrew. Followed by a relaxed chat between Andrew and Webby covering a myriad of subjects - crop trials, milling wheat and some bread making from both these baker boys followed by an admittance of starting to enjoy gardening from Webby - he really is becoming like a proper Dad now!

Andrew gets an opportunity to hark back to the days when he went to a music concert back in the 70s and they chat about VE day and whose who from Dad's army in the Dewing office.

They also talk about harvest and when that might start and also about when the pubs might open...they are very relieved to have a spot of beer and enjoy Bitter and Twisted by Harviestoun Brewery 4.2% which goes down very nicely.

  • 84 – Rob Melton – Storage Issues

In the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 4th May 2020 Andrew talks about the reduction in demand from the wholesale market as lockdown continues.

In Farmchat Andrew is joined by Rob Melton, Manager at Aylsham Grain Store. As Rob approaches his seventh harvest at Aylsham, he explains what goes into managing the storage at Dewing Grain and how it differs from farm storage.

From the initial tests carried out on the bridge, to the temperature probes and stringent monitoring, the aim is always to ensure that the grain remains top quality so that it can be delivered to the malsters without any problems or claims, thereby achieving the malting grade for as many tonnes as possible for the store members.

Andrew reminisces about grain store keepers from years gone by and we hear about the annual award for the spillage idiot.

There’s a welcome return to our regular beer slot, a reminder of what it used to be like when you could have a drink with friends. This week it’s Friday IPA 6.5% by And Union in Bavaria.

  • 83 – Andrew & Webby – Disinfecting Their Way Through Life

Andrew kicks off this week’s podcast with the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 27th April 2020.

In Farmchat Andrew is back with Webby and he wastes no time in getting to the most important question over nappies - some trauma is revealed. Trump is next to be taken down a peg or two with his recent solutions to Covid-19 - why didn't we all realise we just needed to drink some disinfectant or stand under some UV light?!! Then they move on to the Aldborough vigilantes...should Londoners come to their second homes?

Andrew and Webby discuss the oil price drop and the implications this may have, plus they also discuss storage and will Norfolk be full? Andrew has a funny turn and starts being nice to millers and wondering if there is something pleasant to say to Londoners...

Lastly, a big shout out to Ben’s wife Sarah who, with colleagues, is still producing visors for healthcare workers.

  • 82 – Andrew, Ben & Joe – PPE, Putin And Pub Crawls

We kick off this week’s podcast with the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 20th April 2020 in which Andrew and Ben discuss the volatility of the market, Putin, drought and the drop in demand.

In Farmchat Andrew, Ben and Joe discuss market conditions as lockdown continues. First, a big shout out to Ben’s wife Sarah who, with colleagues, has produced over 2,000 visors for healthcare workers. The boys talk about the shortages of PPE, the banks, Trump’s tantrums, Putin and commodities. There’s a quick game of fantasy rugby with Trump and Putin and we yearn for the simpler days when all we had to contend with was Brexit. We round things off with conspiracy theories, Andrew’s pub crawl around the garden and a hotly-awaited update on Webby’s nappy changing prowess. Spoiler alert: he still hasn’t done one.

  • 81 – David Hoyles – Before The Lockdown

This week we have the usual market report from Andrew for week commencing Tuesday 14th April. We are then playing an interview we recorded just before the lockdown in March, which we have been keen to put out for a while. Andrew and Joe chat with David Hoyles who farms in the Long Sutton area of Lincolnshire. He explains how the weather has impacted him this last year, he talks about growing mustard and how renewable energy is one of his major crops. They get on the carbon debate again and the benefits of working in groups and cooperatives for sharing information and marketing.

We hear about what the amazing soils around David can yield and then they crack into the beer after discussing the sloe gin which has already been consumed in a recent recording!

This week they are drinking Moongazer Bouchart 4.9% whilst Andrew retells a story of drinking mild.

  • 80 – Andrew, Tessa, Lily & Molly – Meet The Dewings

In a world of uncertainty, we start this week's podcast with our regular market report for week commencing 6th April 2020.

Working from home, Andrew's special guests this week are wife Tessa and daughters Lily and Molly, all of whom are delighted to be sharing the household chores and one phone line. Andrew has been struck by the affliction affecting middle-aged housebound men up and down the country - bread-making - whilst Tessa has taken on the unenviable task of home-schooling. If you have kids and you're working from home then you'll relate to this one.

  • 79 – The New Normal: Connecting Remotely, Shaven Heads & No Sport

We kick off with the Dewing Grain market report from Andrew for week commencing 30th March 2020.

In Farmchat, Andrew decides to keep the podcasts 'in house' for now as there is so much to talk about and he prefers talking face to face rather than remote recordings. So he is joined by Webby and Josh for an update on Webby's nappy changing activities...but gets to hear more about his shaven head.

They discuss working from home and some of the stresses that they can see emerging and discuss the merits or lack of them of having the radio on whilst you work. Other questions that they muse include: Does life still have meaning without sport? How will life change after Corona? Will more people shop online in future or will people support local farm and village shops more?

How will work change - will we work from home more? Will 9am house parties in fancy dress become a thing?
