The Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 23rd March 2020 is presented this week by Andrew, Ian, Ben and Joe who offer their combined thoughts on the unprecedented times we’re living in.
In Farmchat, we finally get the lowdown on how Webby has taken to fatherhood. The boys debate the UK’s reaction to the pandemic compared to other countries and wonder whether we will reach a point where we have soldiers on the streets. They discuss the role of the farmer and the food sector and how communities can help each other. As well as the serious stuff, they ask the really pressing questions of the day: Why are there so many melons left in the supermarkets and just when will Webby change his first nappy?
Our drink this week is a sloe gin brought in by David Hoyle of G H Hoyles. Catch his interview with Andrew in a future episode.

Despite Corona Virus making the markets tricky to predict Andrew gives you the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 16th March 2020.
In Farmchat Andrew and Ben talk with Lottie Hill, environmental consultant at Brown and Co. Lottie explains the latest on carbon trading and the opportunities around the woodland carbon guarantee and reverse auctions - a complicated new opportunity for land owners probably already interested in planting trees. Lottie explains the new ELMS due to start in 2024 and how Brown and Co are involved in a testing and trial pilot to see carbon sequestration on commercial farms.
They give Brewdog Clockwork Tangerine 4.5% a taste and Ben shows his knowledge of externalities...

We start, as always, with the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 9th March 2020.
In Farmchat Andrew catches up with Caroline Drummond, Chief Executive of LEAF - Linking Environment and Farming - fresh from the Holkham Farming Conference. LEAF have various initiatives to include farming in the curriculum, working directly with teachers and through Farmer Time, whereby farmers use FaceTime or Skype to chat directly with schoolchildren and bring farming into different parts of the curriculum.
The discussion moves on to the value of carbon and the emerging markets, being part of the health agenda, the Food Strategy (the first for 75 years) and how farmers are expected to deliver more for the same price. Caroline emphasises the importance of making the case for farming - the benefits it brings to the economy, to social infrastructure, to mental health - and engaging consumers through initiatives such as Open Farm Sunday (this year on 7th June).
Farmers interested in finding out more about Farmer Time or any of the initiatives mentioned in this episode can contact LEAF on 024 76 413911 or at [email protected]

The Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 2nd March 2020 gives you Andrew’s latest insights into all that’s going on in the markets, including the ongoing impact of the coronavirus.
In Farmchat Andrew catches up with old school friend Roger Jones who, when he managed to show up, was at Acle Secondary Modern with Andrew in the 70s. Roger is the 4th generation of his family to farm at South Walsham and the conversation soon turns to Andrew’s favourite subject of coastal erosion, the response to which Roger describes as “fiddling while Rome burns”. Roger farms his 120 acres of arable land, as well as 200 acres of contract farming and ‘dodges about’ with other work. This is feasible by keeping overheads low and doing as much of the work as possible himself. The smaller farmer may be more about the lifestyle and enjoying the process but are their days numbered?
Our beer this week is another one sent in by a listener - a trend we’re growing to love. It’s Wellington Bomber Porter 5% by Glebe Farm Foods and gets a resounding thumbs up.

We start as always with the latest on the markets, including the coronavirus, with Andrew and the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 24th February 2020.
In Farmchat, Andrew and Ben are joined by David Jones, Farm Manager at The Morley Agricultural Foundation. As well as managing the farm, David helps to fulfil the Foundation's remit of supporting research and educational projects in the East of England through the awarding of grants, work with schools, researchers and other interested organisations, and through the gathering of longitudinal data.
Our beer this week is 4.2% Pricky Back Otchan from the Great Newsome Brewery, the second part of a gift sent by a listener. To say it went down well is an understatement.

We start with Andrew and the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 17th February 2020 and his particular focus is on barley this week - although all crops are covered.
In Farmchat, Andrew and Webby are chewing the cud together and drinking a beer that has been sent in by an avid listener this week - they have an on farm brewery called Great Newsome and the beer they are drinking this week is Sleck Dust - which slips down very nicely and fuels some chat about the markets. They discuss the wheat price and how to get farmers selling. The two lotharios aka Andrew and Webby also touch on valentines and who got a card - they try to pretend they aren't old romantics at heart - but there's plenty of love to go round.

We start, as always, with Andrew and the Dewing Grain market report for week commencing 10th February 2020 and his analysis of how the corona virus might affect the markets.
In Farmchat, Andrew meets up again with Lizzie Emmett - Upper Wensum Cluster Farm Advisor, to chat about a myriad of other issues that they didn't manage to cover in Ep 65 at the end of last year. They kick off with turtle doves and what her group of farmers are doing to encourage more breeding pairs on their farms. They move on to cover cropping and the social benefits of being part of a farm group like the Upper Wensum Cluster. Lizzie finishes with some of her hopes and visions for the future with the end of BPS and hopefully seamlessly moving in to ELM (Environmental Land Management) - and it turns out don't even get Andrew started on turning arable land to scrub...
No beer today as Andrew wasn't in a beer mood - but there will be more beer next week!
