In today's solocast I explore two questions about goals:

1. When are goals necessary to make meaningful things happen in our lives?
2. How do when know when it's time to abandon a goal, and move on?

Somewhere in the middle of answering these questions I explore

• goals and expectations
• goals and disappointment
• goals and accomplishment

And most of all:

• goals and emotions

Whether it's a personal goal, business goal, or creative goal - our goals are driven by an emotional desire - worthy, important, accomplished, accepted, maybe even RELIEVED.

In today's solocast I explore how a 3yr old Facebook memory helped me access joy and appreciation for myself. 

May 14th, 2017 I graduated with my masters degree. May 15th, 2017 I started my first day of work as a therapist in private practice. I remember seeing that memory and feeling all at once - 

"Oh my God. It's only been 3yrs?"

And also - 

"Oh my God. It's ONLY been 3yrs!"

I started thinking about joy. More specifically, what limits joy?

When we want something in our lives so deeply, it can become difficult to hold space for both the desire of a dream coming true and the distance between where we are now and where we want to be. 

This can look like:

1. Wanting a meaningful career
2. Wanting a healthy relationship
3. Wanting to start a family

Disappointment, frustration, loneliness, and grief can feel like waves crashing onto shore that wash you out to sea.

What if the absence of joy is cursing the waves, and joy itself is the recognition of learning to ride them?

Have you ever been so stressed that you didn't realize there was a problem until you took a deep breath and felt a tingling sensation throughout your body? ⁣

1. We experience or witness a stressful event⁣
2. We feel tense, anxious, or overwhelmed⁣
3. Our breathing becomes shallow and constricted. ⁣

When this happens it becomes harder to focus, be present, and aware. In extreme cases this can lead to panic attacks. ⁣

This solocast explores what mediation is (and what it isn't), how it's been beneficial for me personally, and why it might be the best thing to introduce for you overall health and wellbeing.

About a month ago, I was feeling a little restless and overloaded with life’s responsibilities. ⁣

While working side by side at Cafe’ Patachou (…remember those days?), Jen Petro suggested I take a solo-retreat. ⁣

I remember thinking, “Huh? Just go somewhere by myself, for myself, for no other reason than I want to?”⁣

⁣

It sounded indulgent, a little selfish, and OH SO NECESSARY. Saying yes to myself in this way changed my life. Truly. ⁣

Self-care for me this week means using more compassionate, less anxiety inducing language.⁣

   🤍stuck at home >> having a staycation⁣

   🤍feeling lonely >> becoming a better friend to myself⁣

   🤍feeling isolated >> on a retreat ⁣

⁣

Telling myself I’m on a retreat has dropped my stress level and helped me feel more settled in an uncertain time. ⁣

If this is not where you are at this time, taking a solo-retreat may feel more appealing when the storm passes, the dust settles, and we’re able to be in each other’s company again.⁣
