  • 'Best Of' Don't Shoot The Messenger
The universe conspired against Caro and Corrie being able to get into the podcast studio at the same time this week - so instead we're bringing you our first ever 'Best Of'.
We get into the Spring Racing spirit with Australian designer Jane Lamerton, snack on Caro's famous Chicken Sandwiches (see recipe below).
Gerard Whateley drops in with a Netfix recommendation that provides some light relief to some of the more hardcore viewing available these days and Corrie reviews 'Home Fire' by Kamila Shamsie which is our first Book Club read on 'The Book Pod. We'll be discussing the book in November on the show. You can purchase it HERE.
And finally we head back to Episode 19 and one of our most popular guests Caro's Mum Julia Wilson, who had some remarkable memories of the day Harold Holt disappeared.
Follow the show via our Facebook page HERE.
and you can email [email protected].
Thanks to our sponsor The Interchange Bench. Recruit the best staff with The Interchange Bench. Call 1800 i BENCH to get in touch with them today or check out their website HERE.
Don't Shoot The Messenger is produced, engineered and edited by Jane Nield for Crocmedia.

    CARO’s CHICKEN SANDWICH RECIPE
You must buy Wonder White bread or any white sandwich loaf.
Boil a whole chicken for about an hour in a pot of water with some pepper corns, parsley, chopped up carrots and celery (whatever you’ve got).  Must use the whole chicken to get the variation in meat flavours and textures.
Once you turn off the chicken – throw in a couple of chicken breasts to cook as the water cools (for about an hour after turning the pot off).
Remove the chicken from the liquid retaining the stock to use later in soups or risotto etc.
Peel the chicken meat from the carcass and remove the skin. Chop up the chicken meat and the breasts (don’t forget to use the brown meat).
Place chopped chicken into a large bowl. Add very finely chopped spring onion, parsley, celery (one or two sticks), tarragon (or substitute with chives).
Must use whole egg mayonnaise.   Use equal parts mayonnaise to plain greek yoghurt.  Ie if you’re using half a cup of mayo use half a cup of yoghurt too.
If you can afford pine nuts, roast them and add - or you can use toasted almonds.
Use an electric carving knife if possible to remove the crusts.  Cut into little triangles.
    Garnish with herbs to serve.

  • Ep 57 - 'Whose Recipe Is This?'
Join Corrie Perkin and special guests Anna from the Op Shop and journalist and publisher Geoff Slattery.
We dissect the 2018 AFL Grand Final and the West Coast Eagle’s win and Geoff admits he’s more than a little grumpy about the cost and execution of the pre game entertainment.
Sadly the world of footy journalism lost another champion this week – Vale Tony Peek, and we take a look at the ongoing leadership saga that continues to dog the ABC.
Geoff’s ‘Crush of the Week’ for The Interchange Bench is former PM Malcolm Turnbull.
Our "Crush of the Week" is thanks to The Interchange Bench - recruit the best staff with The Interchange Bench. Call 1800 i BENCH to get in touch with them today or check out their website HERE.
In BSF – Anna’s delved into a Korean family saga with “Pachinko’ by Min Jin Lee, everyone’s loving ‘Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road Adventure’ on the ABC and Slatts shares a simple risotto or pilaf recipe that does away with time consuming stirring (see recipe below). You can check out Gabriele Ferron demonstrating the recipe HERE
In ‘6 Quick Questions’ we contemplate the future of Channel 9’s ‘The Footy Show’, Geoff shares survival tips for long haul flights, we touch on Brett Kavanaugh’s rocky road to the US Supreme Court and check in on the guest list for Princess Eugenie’s wedding.
And no matter where you are in the country Anna’s ‘Good Local Tip’ is to take a stroll through your local Botanic Gardens.

Join host Corrie Perkin and internationally-renowned Australian author Liane Moriarty on Episode One of 'The Book Pod'.
Liane discusses her new novel 'Nine Perfect Strangers',  the dichotomy of a writer's life and the 'self loathing' that comes with spending too much time talking about oneself, the thrill of having a novel adapted for the screen by actors like Nicole Kidman and Reece Witherspoon and her involvement in Season 2 of 'Big Little Lies'.
We delve into Liane's childhood literary inspiration, sibling rivalry in a family with three successful writers, and why it's impossible to write while promoting a book.

  • Ep 56 - 'Renovating, My Arse'
Join Caroline Wilson and Corrie Perkin for Episode 56 of ‘Don’t Shoot The Messenger’.
After walking the red carpet at the Brownlow Medal Awards last night, Caro reports back on her highlights and Caro and Corrie reveal their top three best dressed list.
The biggest question of the week is ‘What happened to Richmond?” AND of course Melbourne after both teams bowed out of the race to the grand final in spectacular fashion in the preliminary finals. We discuss Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley’s remarkable season and the rise of the West Coast Eagles. Plus Caro and Corrie tip the Grand Final.
It’s one of the most high profile jobs in the country and this week Michelle Guthrie was unceremoniously sacked as Managing Director of the ABC - we ask why and what next for the ABC?
Caro’s “Crush of the Week” for The Interchange Bench is Jack Higgins who’s hilarious speech while accepting the Goal of the Year award certainly made quite an impression.
Our "Crush of the Week" is thanks to The Interchange Bench - recruit the best staff with The Interchange Bench. Call 1800 i BENCH to get in touch with them today or check out their website HERE.
In “BSF” Corrie’s been engrossed in Liane Moriarty’s brand new novel ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ - Liane will also be Corrie’s first guest on the inaugural episode of our new spin-off podcast ‘The Book Pod’, subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.
Caro has been off to the movies  to see ‘Ladies In Black’ a fun film set in a fictional department store plus Caro shares a sure-fire salad dressing recipe perfect for getting excited about greens again this Spring (see recipe below).
This week Corrie’s grumpy about the baffling world of passwords and in “Six Quick Questions” we head back to the US Supreme Court,  ponder the lack of broadcaster interest in Princess Eugenie’s upcoming wedding and discover an inspiring Instagram account (Father’s of Daughters) that’s gone rather viral.
For those itching to get out into the garden this Spring - Caro shares a couple of green thumb “GLT’s”.

    Tarragon Salad Dressing
    1/4 cup sugar
    1/2 bunch of chopped chives
    1 clove of crushed garlic
    430mls virgin olive oil
    1 tablespoons dijon mustard
    160mls taragon vinegar
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    1/4 bunch chopped parsley
    12 chopped paragon leaves.
Stir / mix well. Makes enough dressing for 2 large salads. Caro recommends leaving out the fresh herbs as the plain dressing will keep well in the fridge for ages, then add the fresh herbs just before serving.
Is delicious with just butter lettuce and lots of avocado.

  • Ep 55 - 'Who Gets The Credit?'
Join Caroline Wilson and Corrie Perkin for Episode 55!
We kick things of this week with a little Tiger talk and an apology to Cats fans from Corrie!
As we look back at the footy season Caro talks coaches, naming Alastair Clarkson as ‘the best coach in the last 50 years’. We love a ‘Footy Fairytale’, Melbourne’s season is certainly shaping up to be just that plus it doesn’t get much bigger than the preliminary final between Richmond and Collingwood on Friday. Caro also reflects on life post her full time role at The Age.
It’s congratulations to Corrie and family after the arrival of granddaughter Willow arrived (all be it a little early on the weekend). Caro and Corrie talk about the changing demands of parenthood and the simple joy of welcoming new life into the world - plus Corrie “Crush of the Week” is dedicated to all of the hard working midwives and nurses who help make neonatal intensive care units (NICU wards) the incredible places they are.  Our "Crush of the Week" is thanks to The Interchange Bench - recruit the best staff with The Interchange Bench. Call 1800 i BENCH to get in touch with them today or check out their website HERE.
In “BSF” Corrie highly recommends Ian McEwan’s ‘The Children Act’ a must read before the movie comes out in November.
Caro’s been to not one but three movies this week ‘The Merger’, ‘A Simple Favour’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ - but which one is the best?
After Corrie’s rave reviews last week about Yottam Ottolenghi’s new cook book ‘Simple’, Caro’s family cooked from it all weekend - she shares a ‘one pot wonder’ Chicken Marbella recipe.
Caro’s grumpy about over the top terminology and ‘non words’ especially those popping up in AFL speak.
There’s plenty to ponder in “6 Quick Questions” including the US Supreme Court’s current woes, the lack of women seeking pre-selection for the Liberal party and the horrifying turn of events for Australian strawberry producers following the needle contaminations.

  • Ep 54 - 'Maybe They Just Wanted The Publicity'
Join Caroline Wilson and Corrie Perkin for Ep 54.
We kick off the show with a healthy dose of housekeeping this week and touch on week one of the AFL Finals and the experience of watching the footy with politicians.
Is sexism at play as candidates jostle for position in the seat of Wentworth? How will the new Morrison government deal with their first big challenge? And how do we feel about positive discrimination?
Caro and Corrie have some strong views on Serena Williams and her outburst at the US Open and we discuss the furore surrounding Mark Knight’s controversial cartoon depicting the dummy spit.
Seventeen years on from the September 11 terrorist attacks we reflect on the day that changed the world, plus Caro shares her thoughts on the twin towers memorial. Caro’s “Crush of the Week” is Bob Woodward thanks to The Interchange Bench - recruit the best staff with The Interchange Bench. Call 1800 i BENCH to get in touch with them today or check out their website HERE.
In “BSF” - Caro’s hooked on Elena Ferrante’s Neopolitan novel having just read ‘The Story of a New Name’, Corrie’s got family viewing in mind as she recommends ‘Queer Eye’ on Netflix and take a sneak peak of Yotam Ottolenghi’s new cook book ‘Simple’ and share a delicious asparagus recipe (see recipe below). 'Simple' is available now at all good bookstores or you can purchase it from Corrie's store HERE.
The anonymous op-ed in the New York times by a Trump insider is making Corrie grumpy this week and in “Six Quick Questions” we talk political sprays, annoying food terms, impactful issues-based advertising, the best Sam Neil films and Theresa May’s daggy dancing.
Corrie also shares a “GLT” podcast tip that’s a must for book lovers - 'The High Low' podcast.

Roasted Asparagus with almonds, capers and dill
    From Yotam Ottolenghi ‘Simple’
    Serves four as a side
600g asparagus, woody ends trimmed (400g)
    3 tbsp olive oil
    30g unsalted butter
    20g flaked almonds
30g baby capers (or regular) pat-dried on kitchen paper
    10g dill, roughly chopped
    Salt and black pepper
Preheat the oven to 200C (fan forced)
    1. Mix the asparagus with 1 tablespoon of oil, a generous pinch of salt and a good grin of pepper. Arrange on a large parchment-lined baking tray, spaced well apart, and roast for 8-12 minutes (timing will vary depending on the thickness of the stalks), until the asparagus is soft and starting to brown in places. Transfer to a large serving plate and set aside.
    2. Put butter into a small saucepan and place on a medium high heat. Once melted, add the almonds and fry for 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently until the almonds are golden-brown.
Pour almonds and butter evenly over the asparagus.
    3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the saucepan and place on a high heat. Once hot, add the capers and fry for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously, until they have opened up and become crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove the capers from the oil and sprinkle over the asparagus, along with the dill. Discard the oil and serve warm.

Spring is in the air and there’s more than a touch of Footy Finals Fever in the studio as Caro’s Tigers prepare to take on Corrie’s Hawks in the first final of the season.
After a mid week golf trip with the girls to the City of Churches last week, Corrie’s full of praise for the ‘girl gang getaway’ and shares some of her Adelaide highlights. Caro’s got a few SA GLT’s of her own as well.
In keeping with the Adelaide theme Caro reports on the ongoing dramas at the Crows and the vibe in a city without a team in the finals - despite such promise earlier in the season.
We remember famed Melbourne sports writer Ron Carter who passed away recently. Corrie pays tribute to her former colleague with some lovely memories of Ron while Caro reflects on his moving memorial service.

A newspaper shortage at Caro’s local store has her in a grump this week and in ‘6 Quick Questions’ we rate Steve Bannon v Sarah Ferguson, touch on Gillon McLachlan and Peter Dutton’s ‘Nannygate’ woes and Corrie has the perfect book for a 1 year old - the Lois and Bob series (available HERE).
Pub the 'Marquis of Lorne’ in Fitzroy is Caro’s lates ‘GLT’ (you'll find details HERE)  for the week and evokes memories of ‘Bunny’s’ the fictional watering hole in 70s series ‘The Young Doctors’.
