I recently went on a six-hour road trip with colleagues for a conference, which felt quite normal to me—but my parents in China thought it was way too far to drive. I reflect on how Americans are used to long road trips due to geography, affordable gas, and good highway infrastructure, while in China, people often prefer high-speed trains or planes for similar distances. I also invite listeners to share what kind of travel feels “far” to them.
