El 1987, el grup de música electrònica Depeche Mode considerava que tot i haver tingut algun èxit amb temes com "Just can't get enough" a començament de dècada, no tenia prou reconeixement. Irònicament, van decidir titular el seu sisè disc "Music for the masses", una profecia que els va reportar un èxit espectacular.

El duet folk format per Paul Simon i Art Garfunkel va tenir una trajectòria molt enrevessada al llarg dels anys 60, plena d'èxits i lluites internes. El grup no va durar més enllà del final de la dècada, fora d'accidentades reunions puntuals. El seu darrer treball, "Bridge over troubled water", va ser el disc de l'any el 1970.

A finals dels anys 90 hi va haver un ressorgiment de la música garatge dels 60: rock de guitarres contundents i cruesa molt propera al blues d'on tot neix. Un dels grups més destacats del moviment va ser el duo de Detroit The White Stripes. El seu quart disc, "Elephant", del 2003, és una de les seves obres més rodones.

El segon disc del trio de vocalistes The Supremes es considera l'obra que va donar a conèixer el mític so Motown al gran públic. Va generar un munt d'èxits i, entre el 1964 i el 1965 va ser capaç de disputar les més altes posicions a les llistes als Beatles.

Figura ben curiosa de la música britànica, va començar a finals dels 60 fent un folk molt personal i va desaparèixer una dècada després, quan es va convertir a l'islam. Després de reaparèixer com a Yusuf i de fer música religiosa, fa sis anys va reprendre, ja a la setantena, el que feia fa mig segle. Les seves millors obres comencen amb el mític "Tea for the tillerman", del 1970.

Roy Orbison va ser un pioner del rock que va triomfar sobretot en la primera meitat dels 60. Després va fer una llarga i trista travessa pel desert, fins que el 1986 David Lynch va incloure una cançó seva en la pel·lícula "Blue velvet". Això va iniciar un revival d'èxits de la seva música i figura. La culminació d'aquest procés va ser el disc "Mystery girl", del 1989, que es va publicar dos mesos després de la seva mort.
