2% seems like a small amount, but it all depends on what it’s a percentage of. Two percent of a dollar? That’s 2 cents. But think about 2% of one trillion one hundred eighty six million dollars. That’s a whole different story. And a whole different level of responsibility.

Tanah Sullivan is the Group Head of Sustainability at GoTo, an ecosystem that contributes around 2% of Indonesia's gross domestic product and serves almost two-thirds of household consumption in Indonesia. What is it? Well, Co-Founder William Tanuwijaya describes it as Amazon, DoorDash, Uber, PayPal, and Stripe all mushed together into one. So, Tanah Sullivan has her hands full, and she takes the weight of her responsibility seriously. For her, it’s all about gaining a deep understanding of GoTo’s millions of drivers and customers in order to be a positive force for Indonesian prosperity and progress all while protecting the planet.

When you hear the word 'design', what do you think? Does it conjure colors? shapes? paint? pixels? aesthetics...composition? You wouldn’t be wrong, but when it comes to designing technology there’s a guiding force more powerful than any singular graphic element, it’s people.

When Alex Cuthbert thinks of design, he’s thinking of how it moves people, both emotionally and literally through the world. It’s about designing an experience that takes into account the customs, habits and idiosyncrasies of any given user or group of users. As of 2020, Alex has been Gojek’s Head of Design spending his days combining tech innovation with human understanding to move people, food, and currency all over Southeast Asia.

Imagine hopping on a bike only to find the bell missing. Ok, so you can’t ring when you pass your friends, but, you can still wave. But what if the baskets missing too? Where do you put your book, your baguette, your raincoat? Not ideal. But what if there are no peddles, or handlebars, or seat? At some point, the machine we call a bicycle is no longer a bicycle. It’s more like a static, lifeless artifact from the past. The same is true for the environment. When you begin to remove seemingly insignificant elements, eventually the entire ecosystem fails.

As a Marine Conservation Biologist, Mikki McComb-Kobza has spent her life and career trying to help people understand the value of every coral, crustacean, and creature in our oceans and the life they help sustain, including our own.
