I have been asked this question soo many times I can’t even tell you.. and I get it.. I know it’s an issue that is very prevalent in the Type 1 Space. Overnight hypos. They SUCK. They are the absolute worst of the worst when it comes to hypos. There is no worse time to have a low blood sugar than in the middle of your sleep. To be woken by a hypo is hell on earth. I'm going to tell you exactly how to stop those overnight hypos (and it has nothing to do with a peanut butter sandwich)..

The idea of treating hypos with fast acting carbs, then following up with 'complex carbs' comes from old school management techniques and multiple daily injection management techniques. It is somewhat outdated advice, but some people are still being advised to do this to treat hypos, and it DOES have it's place (but only in some contexts!). It can be really helpful to know how to treat hypos appropriately, because mis-treating hypos can lead to issues like over-eating, rebound highs, disordered eating patterns, weight gain and more! Listen for step-by-step techniques for treating hypos and when to/when not-to apply the 'complex' carb technique!

However, you don't have to put up with spikes (or lows) from exercise, just because you have type 1.. there is SO much you can do to prevent these from happening on a regular basis! Let's talk about one of the sneakiest unhealthy foods you should be aware of (and try to eat less of) ... Hydrogenated Fats & Vegetable Oils!!! Hydrogenated fats are vegetable oils with hydrogen added to them via an industrial chemical process. This is done to allow vegetable oils (that are naturally liquid at room temperature) to become solid at room temperature - and allow them to be 'spreadable' like butter. Vegetable oils are already terrible for your health as they increase inflammation, but the hydrogenation process also makes them carcinogenic... In this episode, I give you examples, tell you what foods they are sneaking around in, how you can avoid them while doing your shopping, and what to replace them with!
