The Stonecutter Principle
There’s an old story about a stonecutter whose job was to break massive rocks into usable pieces.
Every morning, before the sun was fully up, he’d walk out to the quarry carrying nothing more than a hammer and a chisel. No heavy machinery. No shortcuts. Just his tools and his commitment to the work.
He’d find a huge stone—solid, stubborn, unmoving—and begin.
Swing.
Nothing.
Swing again.
Still nothing.
Ten strikes.
Twenty strikes.
Fifty strikes.
No cracks.
No sound of weakness.
No visible progress.
To anyone watching, it would look pointless.
Like wasted effort.
Like he wasn’t getting anywhere.
But the stonecutter didn’t stop.
He kept swinging.
One hundred strikes later—still nothing.
Then on the 101st swing, the stone split clean in two.
Now here’s the key part of the story.
It wasn’t the 101st strike that broke the stone.
It was every single strike before it.
Each swing weakened the stone just a little—so little you couldn’t see it.
So little it didn’t feel like progress.
But it mattered.
