#46 What Your Paraprofessionals Want From a Supervisor-Part 1

Best. Guest. Ever!

Ok...I might be a tad partial to today's guest but it's for a good reason. Today my daughter, Kamryn, joins us to share her experience working as a paraprofessional.

This interview with Kamryn kicks off a full month of chats with paraprofessionals and if you haven't figured it out yet...it's my favorite topic to teach on.

All of us who work within the field of special education, whether you are a teacher, or an administrator or a related service provider...working with paraprofessionals is a large part of your job.

And from experience...it can be a very stressful part or it can be a very rewarding part.

Through this 4 part series and leading up to the launch of my course, The How-To Guide for Training Paraprofessionals, I want to help you learn how to support your staff so that you can all be on the same page this coming school year.

Paraprofessionals have become an indispensable resource in our schools and classrooms. They provide individual and small-group instruction to students, they assist teachers in meeting the needs of special education students by following the IEPs, and even offer behavioral support and supervision.

And just like there are many different components to what a paraprofessional does, there are also many different personalities and different strengths and weaknesses,

However, it has been my experience that they all seem to have one thing in common...their desire to serve and work with students who have special needs. And that’s where this month’s guests come into play.

Each week in August, I will have a different paraprofessional come on the show to talk about their experiences in the classroom from what they need from their teachers to what training they desire to what support they crave.

Today, Kamryn and I discuss

  • Why she chose to become a paraprofessional
  • How not all special educators are equal in their ability to lead their staff
  • What makes a good leader and a good paraprofessional
  • What paras need from their supervisors and
  • How a handbook like this one would have beneficial during her year as a para
