Bounce Back

Episode Four - Nathan Buckley

Listen Later

There’s no doubt a lot of us are feeling a bit lost or struggling at the moment.

Well you’re not alone. In Bounce Back, Andrew talks to prominent Australians about major challenges that have been thrown their way, and how they’ve overcome these difficulties on the road to success.

This series will feature some of Australia’s most recognised sports men and women, prominent businesspeople and well-known politicians, allowing them to tell their story, in their own words.

There are few Australians who won’t have heard of our guest Nathan Buckley.

Nathan’s footy career is the stuff of dreams. He's been the Collingwood Football Club's senior coach since 2012, before that he played 260 games with the club, establishing one of the best football resumes in the game’s history. He won the Copeland Trophy, Collingwood’s Best and Fairest Medal, six times.

As captain between 1999 and 2007, he led Collingwood to two AFL Grand Finals despite the pies falling short both times, he personally starred with leading in the disposals in each contest and winning the coveted Best on Ground Norm Smith Medal in 2002.

He was selected in the All Australian team seven times, he captained the Australian International Rules Football team against Ireland, and in 2003 he won the AFL's highest individual honour, The Brownlow Medal.

In an, at times, controversial coaching transition Buckley took the Senior Coaching role at Collingwood in 2012. While the football world adored Nathan Buckley the player when he was flying high and the team was winning, when the Pies were regularly losing under Buckley the coach, supporters questioned his value and whether or not being a great player qualified someone for a coaching role at one of the top AFL clubs and... Collingwood supporters weren't shy of letting him know of their thoughts.

And with most other footy fans - and the media - happy to see Collingwood in turmoil, the pressure mounted.

Bounce Back is about promoting well-being and good mental health, by showing that even in the most difficult of times, there are people who you can turn to for support - whether they’re mates, family, colleagues, professionals even your neighbours.

It’s about how to look after yourself when things are tough, believing in yourself and knowing you can come through it even stronger.

Dr. Andrew Rochford is a proud ambassador for DrinkWise, which is sponsoring this podcast.
