Meaning and Moxie After 50

Exploring Grief and Building Bonds with Nick Gaylord

Listen Later

Have you ever wondered how shared grief can forge unbreakable bonds? I have an intimate conversation with Nick Gaylord, the creator of the "Our Dead Dads Podcast," as we explore the transformative journey that led him to create a unique platform for people to discuss their experiences of grief. We unpack the complex emotions Nick felt following his father's passing and how these shared moments of vulnerability with his brothers and friends inspired him to start his podcast.

In our discussion, we emphasize the importance of normalizing conversations around grief and emotional healing. Nick and I delve into how societal expectations, especially for men, shape our responses to loss and the profound healing that comes from openly sharing our stories. By engaging in these heartfelt discussions, we create a supportive community where listeners can explore their own journeys through grief and find solace in shared experiences. Tune in for a blend of practical advice, personal growth stories, and the power of communal support, reminding us all of the resilience found in connection and conversation.

Nick has always had a passion for helping others. As a boy he realized his incredible gift with numbers and thought he would become a math teacher. When that didn’t happen, he brough this talents to the pharmaceutical industry and has spent 28 years within in Quality Assurance and Document Control, always mindful of doing his part in the quest to develop life-changing medicines for the patients who need them. Yet somehow it has never felt like enough to Nick. No matter how meaningful his work in this industry has been, he has always wanted more, wanted to reach more people and in an entirely different way. So in January 2024, Nick decided to try a new approach by launching a podcast designed as a
safe space for grief and laughter around the death of a parent. The podcast platform enables him to tell the very personal story of his complicated relationship with his own father, who passed in 2021, and the many unresolved feelings he has  dealt with since.

Our Dead Dads is Nick’s way to give people who are struggling a community where they can come to see they are not alone. Nick wants the podcast to be a platform for sharing stories of grief and loss, the trauma that often follows and, ultimate, of moving forward; to normalize laughing and crying through the main and most of all, to normalize talking to each other about
all of it. Nick also hopes to inspire countless others, who are living with crippling grief of their own, who maybe do not see a way forward or think anyone is listening, willing to listen or able to understand, to tell their own story or find healing in another’s. Through the magic of conversation, Nick hopes to normalize  this type of difficult conversation that has been seen as taboo for far too long. It’s time to change the world one damaged soul at a time with the help of Our Dead Dads Podcast.
