  • Insights into Playing the Long Game as an Artist with Shezad Dawood

Today, Ceri sits down with the brilliant Shezad Dawood, whose expansive practice spans painting, textile, sculpture, film and digital media. He weaves stories, realities and symbolism to create richly layered worlds, and exhibits at leading institutions worldwide, from MoMA and the ICA to the Venice Biennale, Guangzhou Triennial and Manifesta. His works are held in major collections including the Guggenheim, Tate, LACMA, the National Gallery of Canada, and the British Museum.

Shezad unpacks the inspiration behind his work. He shares why he always proposes the most ambitious, even bonkers ideas, how he maximises every project and why he stays clear of social media. Whether you're early in your career or looking to push your work further, this conversation is packed with insight from playing the long game as an artist.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Your artistic voice emerges from a willingness to play, to fail, and to continuously reimagine your practice. It's less about perfection, and more about persistent, passionate inquiry.

The intersection of artistic vision and community engagement is where the real magic happens. Shezad's approach to public art is revolutionary: it's not about imposing a vision, but creating a generous, collaborative dialogue.

Your intuition is what will lead you to the right place.

    BEST MOMENTS

"He was a really tough critic and teacher who would question every brush mark. It just gave me this real sort of critical kind of eye and voice on my own work.”

“Stay with your practice. Keep developing, keep working at it. Don't be easily dissuaded, deterred, distracted or pushed into an avenue you don't want to go down."

“Engage with people. You might have a coffee with somebody, they say something, and you think “Oh, that´s the missing thing that I was sort of looking for.”

  • Are We There Yet?

Have you ever walked into a gallery opening, heart pounding, and thought, “What am I doing here? Everyone else looks like they belong”. You're not alone. That voice in your head telling you you're not enough, it's not the truth. It's a glitch in the system. Today, Ceri explains how to reframe how you show up and who you think you are when you do.

Your overachieving brain whispering, “You don't belong here”, does not make it true. It's your inner critic trying to keep you safe. But safe is not where art happens. Safe is not where connection happens. And safe is definitely not where you get to grow. So, you really do need to learn to stand up to your inner critic and reframe things, which is exactly what Ceri teaches you to do, in this episode.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Before you even leave the house, do a little thought housekeeping. Remind yourself your presence is enough. You don't need to earn your place. You already have it.

Put on some emotional armour. Visualise kindness. Imagine a friend or studio mate, welcoming you with warmth, delighted to see you.

Walk into a room with purpose, not pressure. Ditch your performance mindset. Instead of pitching, seek out three people and make them feel seen, heard and valued. Opportunities materialise when you connect, not when you push.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Assume generosity, that stranger you're nervous about, they're probably more worried about themselves than judging you. Most people are kinder than your inner critic.”

“It's about being present, because the more curious you are, the less space there is for comparison, and the more generous you are, the more generous the room becomes. .”

“"Next time that inner voice says, 'Are we there yet?' Smile, nod, tell it we're already there love - and we've only just begun.”

The right therapy frees up a huge amount of mental and emotional energy to use for your art.

Consistent practice is key, even when it is hard.

    BEST MOMENTS

“If you aren't letting who you are come through in your work, it's just porridge - it's just gonna look like other´s work.”

“I thought I was the only one with that voice in your head telling you that you suck. I did not realise that is a human condition.”

“By going to therapy (EMDR) and getting yourself a mentor, you've given yourself that gift of actually rewriting the story for yourself.”

“It's 20 chapters, and each chapter is about a lie, the bulls**t that artists have to navigate. ”

  • Should You Start a Newsletter as an Artist?

Is it really worthwhile for an artist to start a newsletter, these days? Ceri’s answer is - yes. She explains why, even in the age of AI, endless algorithm tweaks and dopamine-driven social scrolls, newsletters are still the most effective way to generate sales.

Ceri concisely explains how to start your own artist newsletter and shares 4 real world examples.

The Artist Mastermind Circle: Ready to stop second-guessing and start building momentum in your art career? Applications are now open for the next Artist Mastermind Circle—a six-month coaching programme for mid-career artists who are serious about growing their confidence, income, and opportunities.

Apply by 21 July at https://cerihand.com/artist-mastermind-circle/ and take the next bold step.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Stats don´t lie – artists make more sales via email than they do any social media channel. A newsletter invites people to give you their email address.

Newsletters are an effective way to build trust.

With newsletters, there are no algorithms to get past.

Newsletters help new audiences engage with your previously published work.

Frequency is the key to trust. If you ghost your audience they will disappear.

    Gentle CTAs work best.

Be you, don´t worry about perfect grammar.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Newsletters can feel quaint, like carrier pigeons in the age of drones, but here's my argument: Yes, it's worth it.”

“Artists consistently get more traction, more commissions and more sales through email than any other channel.”

“Social media might get the likes, but newsletters get the buys.”

“You don't need to be perfect; you just need to be consistent. It's not a megaphone, it's a magnet.”

  • Chewing Gum and Cinematic Truths – A Rebellious Filmmaker’s Journey with John Smith

In this episode Ceri is joined by the incomparable John Smith—artist-filmmaker, mischievous narrator, cinematic magician. Over the past five decades, John has created more than 60 award-winning films, videos and installations that have screened in cinemas and museums around the world, from MoMA in New York to Tate Modern, and earned him honours including the Jarman Award and a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists.

Often funny, always astute, his work reshapes how we see and hear the world. In this conversation, John shares how growing up in East London in the 50s and 60s fuelled his anti-authoritarian streak, how he stumbled into art school via psychedelic paintings and audacity, and how humour became his Trojan horse for smuggling serious ideas into unsuspecting minds.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Being rebellious is fuel for creativity.

Humour is a great way to break down barriers, including artistic ones.

When you connect with your audience your confidence and creativity grows.

    Art is about communication.

Your old work can resonate with new audiences, so use it.

Working through illness, if you can physically do it, is hard but rewarding.

Be true to yourself in your work. Integrity beats commercialism.

At times you will work within limitations, embrace those situations. You will learn a lot.

    BEST MOMENTS

“The power of language and storytelling is so strong that when we are told something we can’t help but half believe it.”

“That film was made in the context of people making work, which was anti illusionistic, was which had its intention to undermine the illusion of cinema and make us realise that that that cinema is manipulating us.”

“Humour absolutely is a survival mechanism.”

“The market is a fickle beast…so, you have to make work you love, regardless.”

  • Why You Feel Drained After a Big Show (And What to Do About It)

In this episode, Ceri looks at why so many artists feel completely drained after a big show. She explains why this is a natural part of the creative cycle, how to build up your resilience before a show so the drop in energy you feel is less drastic, and the practical things you can do to enable yourself to recover faster and ignite your creative spark again.

It's natural to feel drained after a big show.

The adrenaline and cortisol that kicks in to get you ready for and through a show disappears once it is over, leaving you feeling flat.

Your body can only produce and run on adrenaline in short bursts. Expecting your body to do it for back-to-back shows leads to burnout.

That after-show crash is predictable, so you can plan for it, which will greatly benefit your work.

    Build your resilience in advance.

Schedule time to decompress and recharge after a show.

Subscribe to Ceri´s free Beat The Block weekly newsletter to learn more about managing your creative energy - https://cerihand.com/subscribe/

    BEST MOMENTS

“These hormones keep you sharp and focused, but they're meant for short sprints, not months long endurance. ”

“Create a music playlist that lifts your mood, buy food that nourishes, build in the rituals that remind your body and your brain that this pressure is temporary.”

“The creative crash is part of the cycle. Plan for it. Meet it with grace, and your creativity won't just survive. It will grow stronger, steadier, wiser.”

  • The 5 Types of Confidence Every Artist Needs (And How to Build Them)

Today, Ceri talks about something that causes more anxiety than almost anything else in an artist's career - confidence. She demonstrates that confidence is not a single magical personality trait that you either have or you don't, it is actually a toolkit of slightly different skills that any artist can learn.

Artists need to develop 5 types of confidence, Ceri explains what they are and how to build each of them. She also provides you with a simple coaching exercise you can use to start doing this immediately.

    • Artists need to develop 5 core types of confidence.

    • Creative confidence comes when you trust your ideas and explore new materials and ways of working.

    • It’s not enough to make the work—you have to talk about it at openings, in applications, to curators, collectors and peers.

    • Recognising your worth is at the root of building the confidence to ask for the price you want.

    • Start building networking confidence by taking small steps.

    • Build the confidence to say no.

    • Build your confidence toolkit using the coaching exercise Ceri shares.

    BEST MOMENTS

    “Confidence isn’t a trait. It’s a toolkit.”

“Abandon safe paths, make the “weird” work that excites you but terrifies you.”

“Pricing confidence starts by understanding your worth is not determined by what someone else is “willing” to pay.”

“Action creates clarity, and clarity builds confidence. You don't need to wait to feel confident before you act.”
