      Quotes by Sara Aguilar

“Sugar, be tired, or drink alcohol were the three main triggers for seizure”

“And I just had a lightbulb moment, I thought, well, if it works for them, then it probably works for anyone who gets seizures and definitely for epilepsy and from that moment on, I was literally on a mission to get these exogenous ketones for my husband.”

“My background is anthropology, I hadn’t worked in health and supplements and lifestyle. So to be able to just learn more about health and ancestral living and from a kind of an evolutionary perspective on creating health for us was fantastic.”

“I do more of a flex keto diet, which I think is more natural because it represents how we would have evolved, sometimes being in ketosis, sometimes running on carbs.”

“He hasn’t  had a seizure for over 2 years”

“I found a more low carb paleo approach suits me best and with lots of intermittent fasting. I’ll often be in ketosis, but I wouldn’t say I do a strict ketogenic diet, it’s more of a flex keto diet, which I think is more natural as well, because it represents how we would have evolved, sometimes being in ketosis, sometimes running on carbs.”

“I think they [exogenous ketones] support the transition to a ketogenic diet when you’re first starting.”

“Personally I use them maybe once a week, maybe once every two weeks. If I’m really tired, or if I’m doing a longer fast, because they really help with fasting. I wouldn’t take them every day because I don’t need to take them every day.”

“I would recommend the first step is to take out the inflammatory and input remove that eliminate those you want to clean your environment before you start throwing supplements in”

      Dr David Unwin

Dr David Unwin FRCGP works at the Norwood NHS Surgery in Southport near Liverpool, UK where he has cared for the same population since 1986 as a family doctor. To date 102 out of 201 of his patients with Type 2 diabetes have achieved drug-free remission. This gives a remission rate of 50% at 30 months duration of a lower carb diet, one of the best results for any clinic in the world.

For the past few years, he has been a UK Royal College of General Practitioners expert clinical advisor on diabetes.

Dr Unwin’s work has been covered by both BBC, C4 & C5 television, The New Scientist, The Times, The Daily Mail and The British Medical Journal. As @lowcarbGP he has over 62,000 followers on Twitter

Southport (UK) GP, Dr David Unwin has seen a lot of changes to the health of his community over the years.  The surgery has over 9500 patients, which since 1986, has seen an 8 fold increase in Type 2 Diabetes.  As his patients were becoming sicker, he became increasingly frustrated that he couldn’t help them other than prescribing more medication.  That was until 2013 when one of his patients decided not to follow his advice.  Instead, she challenged him to look at how eating carbohydrates actually was making her sicker.  Now, as the ‘Low Carb GP’ Dr Unwin advocates for the use of low carbohydrate diets for not only Type 2 Diabetes but other health conditions such as high blood pressure and fatty liver.

      Dr David's Top Tips
      1. Never see yourself as a problem consider yourself as
      2. Interesting puzzles of your own body
      3. Be curious - see yourself as a lifelong experiment which you are continuously refining by noticing what is working and do more of it.

    7. 065: Amy Eiges – Living Proof of Hope
      Amy Eiges

Amy Eiges is a health coach and reformed chronic dieter who is passionate about helping others recover from the diet-binge-gain-shame cycle she struggled with for years. Since discovering a ketogenic and low-carb lifestyle, she has lost 225 pounds and has both reversed pre-diabetes and resolved lifelong depression.

“When I was just starting out, facing over 200 pounds to lose seemed insurmountable, and the idea I would ever be where I am now was unfathomable. Know this: I am not extraordinary. I just finally got the right advice, put one foot in front of the other and didn't look back. I know now that it can be done, but after battling this war for 40 years I had lost hope that it was really, truly possible. I am living proof that it is.”

Amy considered bariatric surgery when she weighed 400lbs but felt that it wouldn’t be right for her as she was concerned she would replace her food addiction with another addiction. When she found keto it was at the right time when some of life stressors had been overcome and she could focus on herself and her health. She is sad that she got such bad advice from experts but recognises that she might not have been in the right place earlier in her life and at the same time regrets the time wasted. She is now a health coach who can give to others a chance she didn’t get so that they don’t have so much wasted time, like she did.

      Amy's Top Tips
      1. Hope - it is possible
      2. Are you hungry? Be aware of foods that keep you full and those foods that light up your brain
      3. Not every food experience has to be a party in your mouth

      Enter your text here...

      Dr Lucy Burns

Dr Lucy Burns is a GP and a lifestyle medicine physician. She works on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Dr Lucy, along with practice partner Dr Mary Barson run Real LIfe Medicine. This was the inspiration to create an online learning platform to share this information far and wide.

Lucy has muscular dystrophy which impairs her mobility. In her 20’s she managed her weight with exercise. Alas, this is no longer possible. She became overweight/obese and was insulin resistant. Two years ago, she lost 20 kgs by adopting a low carb lifestyle and more importantly has maintained this.

Dr Lucy is known for her positive can-do nature and is an eternal optimist. Despite this, she has experienced depression for many years, which is now in remission thanks to her lifestyle changes.

She practices meditation daily (well at least second daily). Dr Lucy also speaks at conferences for doctors on weight management, as well as events for the general public, and is now considered an expert in this field. Dr Lucy is a mum to two teenage girls - say no more.

Initially trained in molecular biology, Suzie Edge completed her medical degree specialising in trauma and orthopedics.  During her time working in the UK NHS, she became increasingly disillusioned with medicine and embarked on a career change, this time as a history focussed writer.  Her focus on health, not only in her medical practice, but also for herself and how she can best achieve her health and physical activity goals lead her to low carb keto.  But it wasn’t without some challenges which we discuss how reaching out for help and connecting with community has helped her overcome and fully commit to positive lifestyle changes. Suzie shares some of her morning routines, including cold water showers.

      Dr Lucy's Top Tips
      1. We need to unpack the stories in our head
      2. Set yourself healthy boundaries which support your way of life

      Dr Suzie Edge

Dr Suzie Edge trained as a molecular biologist before moving to medicine where she became interested in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, and pre-hospital emergency care (something I have in common with Louise).

After becoming somewhat disillusioned with medicine and the NHS she did a masters degree in modern history and during lockdown started to make medical and human body history content on social media, particularly on TikTok where she has gained 197,000 interested followers.

She has recently signed a publishing deal for her first non-fiction book and writes fiction in her spare time.

Suzie became interested in low carb and keto after years of not understanding how diet and exercise were not helping her achieve sporting goals. She is especially interested in how online communities can help each other with their goals, and fight off the dangerous onslaught of pharma-backed government policies.

Suzie is a keen martial artist (something I have in common with Jackie) and has a senior brown belt in her current disciple Sooyang Do, a derivative of Taekwondo.

Suzie lives in Scotland with her husband and two teenage girls and their spaniel, Scout.

    10. 062: Dr Rob Cywes – The Carb Addiction Doc
      Dr Rob Cywes

Robert Cywes M.D., PhD is a clinically practicing doctor and surgeon in Florida and Idaho. His mission is educating the public about a carbohydrate addiction approach to treating obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Understanding the importance of replacing carbs in your diet with real food while simultaneously replacing carbs as a toxic, harmful response to emotional tension with a more effective diverse healthy set of emotion management tools for lifelong sustainability of mental and physical health, happiness and well-being.

Converting people from toxic sugar burners to healthy fat (keto) burners while addressing the cause of addiction to carbs from an emotion management perspective.

Sometimes using obesity surgery and devices as tools along the way, and helping people who have had bariatric surgery stay healthy and not relapse

Dr Rob Cywes is the ‘Carb Addiction Doc’ whose medical practice focuses on the psychology and physiology of carbohydrate addiction.  He was not overweight until he moved to the USA and started to eat SAD (Standard American Diet) when the weight piled: he gained 100 pounds. He realised that his weight struggle wasn’t a problem with calories, but a dysfunctional relationship with a drug called sugar.  When he treated sugar like a drug and himself as a drug addict, he was able to lose the weight and has remained stable for 22 years. He now recognises that there is a physiological component and a psychological component and for many, they have two jobs: firstly, deal with the psychological component in order to be successful in managing the emotional tensions which lead to secondly, dealing with physiological dependence of those instant gratification foods leading to carbohydrate addiction.

      Dr Rob's Top Tips
      1. Take ownership of your dependency on sugar and starch as a form of emotional management
      2. Eat the elephant in small pieces
      3. Be the tortoise, not the rabbit.  Think of change as a habit.

      Suzanne Facer-Reeves

Suzanne Facer-Reeves has been obese all of her life and has tried most of the diets out there. It had resulted in a constant yo-yo effect that just made her get bigger.

Her weight has caused medical problems and she was heading towards becoming diabetic, like her Mum who died in her early 60’s as a result.

Something else had to change, she had always said that she felt it was like an addiction. When the press reported from medics that all obese people are advised to do is just move more and eat less, she would often say “No it’s not”. Finally, she discovered low carb and now knows that the addiction was carbs. Currently, Suzane is 11 stone lighter, very much in control of food and feeling the best she ever has.

An incredible weight loss of journey of over 70kg (11st or 154lb). Suzanne had tried all the diets. She was a yo-yo dieter and each time would put on more weight. Then in her 50s she started to have health issues which meant that she needed to find a solution.  Tom Kerridge’s Dopamine Diet book lead her to the Diet Doctor, which got her started and on her low carb journey and she hasn’t looked back.

      Suzanne's Top Tips
      1. Start slowly - lower the carbs slowly
      2. Don’t let the scales rule you

He co-authored the book ‘THE FIX for Cravings’ with Cynthia Myers-Morrison.

As part hisINFACT training,  David did an assessment of his food addiction tendencies.  The results came back: he was an early stage food addict.  The result did not come as surprise given that his mum and sister were both also food addicts.

Working as a bariatric dietician he used the Intensive Outpatient Protocol for those having considering weight loss surgery and started running intensive relapse prevention groups.

David explains the triangle of romance, debate and guilt in identifying trigger foods and how building a community is so important in supporting those living with addiction and in their recovery.

It was the advice that was the problem. He found hope by having a strategy that he could make significant changes to improve his health. There was no stopping him.

He now works to bring home to others do the same in his community as an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration UK. He considers himself a role model for others around him who want to make the change and improve their health and their lives.

For more than half a century we’ve been told to eat a diet high in grains and low in saturated fat and instead of improving health outcomes the incidence of non-communicable disease has escalated.

Discovering Belinda's husband, Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Gary Fettke, had been targeted for 'active defence' by the cereal industry in 2014 and subsequently became the only medical doctor in the world - 'silenced' - from providing nutrition advice to his patients; people with metabolic disease and the complications of Type 2 diabetes, requiring debridement and even amputation of their lower limbs, was unbelievable...

Belinda began her research into the vested interests and ideology shaping our dietary and health guidelines to clear Gary's name. She began asking why 'plant-based' dietary and health guidelines had become strict rule books, who was writing them and who was defending them! Incredibly she discovered... the answers were buried in the pages of history.

Belinda Fettke was the voice during the time when her husband, orthopedic surgeon, Dr Gary Fettke was being silenced by the cereal industry.  She uncovered deep in the history books, that our dietary guidelines, research and medical curriculum was being rewritten to remove animal protein and fat, replacing them with fruit, grains, nuts, seeds and plants as ‘God’s appointed diet for man’. This is clearly not evidence-based but ideological and religious.  Now our doctors, nurses and dietician education is being influenced by the food industry and religious sects.
