In the final of three parts, Fashion: No Filter passes the mic to our guest editor Henrietta Gallina as we explore the role of mainstream media in the current climate. 

In light of the rallying cry for the fashion industry to put an end to ongoing systemic racism, Henrietta, Camille and Monica have been having some tough and candid conversations about the state of play and how they want to participate and show up in this moment. Their conclusion: Fashion: No Filter would share its platform in order to create meaningful dialogue and help foster understanding, learning and shared experiences in the most authentic way. 

In today’s conversation, Henrietta speaks to trailblazing fashion critic Robin Givhan who is a journalist at The Washington Post. Her work won her the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006 which is incidentally the first time the award was given to a fashion writer. The Pulitzer Committee cited Robin’s “witty, closely observed essays that transform fashion criticism into cultural criticism”. 

Henrietta and Robin begin with a birdseye view on the state of the industry today and move on to cover a range of topics. Robin explains why she claims in a recent piece that the fashion system was broken long before the pandemic hit and why it needs a reboot. They also discuss the racial fallout, performative marketing and smoke and mirror optics of advertising and inclusivity, cancel culture vs accountability and the importance of equity and equal representation. Robin who exemplifies the “only one” allegory in many ways, also looks back on her prestigious career and trajectory.

As in the previous episode, the interview is followed by reactions and takeaways from your hosts Monica and Camille accompanied by Henrietta followed by a quick recap of the genesis of the project.

Jordan and Henrietta look at the role of PR within the fashion ecosystem, explore the morality behind this often murkier branch of the industry, (given PRs are typically paid to do what brands and clients need and gloss over the mistakes they make), and the need for change within this specific sphere. They also take a closer look at hard-to-spot but extremely prevalent racial micro-aggressions and their potential effects on a black person’s mental health.

The three speak candidly about their experiences as black female creatives in fashion — Tamu having started out as a freelance photographer, and going on to found her blog All the Pretty Birds, and Danielle as an editor at magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and In Style. 

While both guests have been outspoken about racism in fashion since the murder of George Floyd, (and before,) this conversation takes many unexpected turns and brings forth new perspectives, interpretations and potential solutions to the industry’s systemic issues going forward. In this episode of Fashion: No Filter, Monica and Camille sit down with French fashion documentarian Loic Prigent, who is known for his innovative insider documentaries, narrated in his famous humouristic tone which dissect the fashion world of today. Prigent's films feature fashion icons Jacquemus, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel and Chanel -- there are lots more, but that makes for a very long sentence.

It seems Prigent was always intended for the unique cross-section where fashion and broadcast journalism collide: his breadth knowledge of the industry and its history is profound, his witticisms are endlessly observant. He has essentially invented his own style of fashion reporting, holding up a colourful mirror to the industry itself, whilst allowing us all to take a step back and chuckle about its absurdities. 

How did the young Loic Prigent growing up on the French Atlantic coast begin dreaming of Fashion Shows? And how, for that matter, did he begin getting invited to them, eventually gaining the trust of the most exclusive houses, to the extent that they invitingly open their doors to his camera crews (a rare feat)
