This time, Monica and Camille make a visit to the home of Brazilian creative director Francisco Costa. Best known for his 13-year tenure as Women’s Creative Director of Calvin Klein, Costa twice won the coveted CFDA Designer of the Year Award during this time— the highest honour for a fashion designer in America. 

Today, Costa is reflective on his journey from a childhood growing up in Brazil, inspired by his designer and community-organised mother, to Manhattan in the 90s, where he taught himself English before attending FIT and being hired to design for Oscar de La Renta and Gucci under Tom Ford. 

Uniquely open, fun, and generous in spirit, Costa lets your hosts in on his true feelings about the state of big fashion business today, and takes them on a mental trip to the Amazon, where, after leaving Calvin Klein, he found his new source of inspiration. 

His latest venture, Costa Brazil, is not only sustainable but sources its ingredients from the depths of the Amazon rainforest. And as Monica and Camille learn, Costa’s scents and luxurious oils, like all his creative endeavours (and storytelling!) transport you to another world….

Enter Cate Holstein, founder of Khaite, one of the most talked about emerging brands in the industry today, that launched in the Fall of 2016 — and is incidentally up for the 2019 CFDAs fashion awards emerging designer of the year on June 3rd.

Monica and Camille get a studio visit from friend-of-the-pod Alexandra van Houtte, founder and CEO of tag-walk.com, fashion’s first online search engine. At 29 Alexandra is already a key figure in the fashion tech landscape, having dreamt up the idea of a keyword search database for stylists and journalists in need of a reference centre for runway pieces, new designers and trends. Alexandra had the idea while working as a frustrated stylist at Paris fashion glossies, identifying a missing tool while planning shoots for editors late into the night. 

When she launched Tagwalk three years ago from her sofa, investors turned her down and the press was slow to catch on to the concept. Today, Alexandra is on Vanity Fair’s list of the world’s 50 most influential French people. How did she ascend to fashion greatness in such a short period of time? This week New York Times fashion director and chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman talks to your hosts about her month-long probe into the sexual misconduct allegations against photographers Marion Testin and Bruce Weber. 

In January this year, dozens of men stated that Mario Testino and Bruce Weber had secually exploited them on set. Next, similar allegations were levelled against Patrick Demarchelier.

The domino effect commenced: within just a few months, a handful of fashion's most powerful photographers had been dethroned, denounced and accused of exploiting their immense power. Yet the backlash was muted, and a wider, mainstream ripple was basically nonexistent. The men weren't publicly slated in the way that various Hollywood figures had been, and most publications chose to quietly phase them out as opposed to issuing public statements.

Monica and Camille talk to Vanessa Friedman about the importance of real accountability in the fashion industry and why there is still a way to go despite the #metoo awakening. They also ask her about what it takes to be an objective and fair arbitrator in the creative field, the importance of critical feedback for all and the new role social media has started to play in this field.
