  • Mo’Ath Alkhawaldeh: How Running Will Positively Change the World -R4R 041
In this interview we hear from Mo’ath Alkhawaldeh from Jordan, who shares a different story compared to my other episodes.
Starting with his first 10k in Beirut, Mo takes us through his running journey sharing running-for- real stories of races and people he has met along the way. He tells us about the advice he received from Deena Kastor and Meb about his goals.
Coming to the U.S. for academics, he takes us through his transition from living in Jordan to living in the U.S. and the progress he made with his running on a university team.
He describes the differences in running Jordanians perceive compared to those in the U.S. or the UK.
We discuss Ramadan and how he physically, nutritionally, and mentally trains through this time.
Like many runners I have spoken with, Mo, too, is an advocate of positive change. He speaks very passionately about the NGO he works for called Generations for Peace.
We discuss the ability for professional athletes to make a pretty comfortable living in the U.S. compared to Jordan. He describes his first-hand experience of running in the U.S. as it relates to sport doctors, physios and women runners.
He very eloquently explains what running is really about, and gives wonderful examples of how running can affect us emotionally.

Mo’ath Alkhawaldeh is a Jordanian long distance runner who is a promoter for peace.  He works with Generation for Peace, an organization that uses sports to build peace by bringing youth together.

    * How Mo’ath transitioned to study in the U.S. and run for university.
    * How Mo is using his experiences and knowledge of what the U.S. has to offer runners to benefit others in Jordan.
    * What Mo thinks makes runners want to change things for the positive.
    * What Generations for Peace (GFP) is, its purpose, and how it is used by countries around the world. Also, why he focuses on the parents when the programme is for the youth.

    Mo’s Power PoseInspirational Quotes
Running is one of the hardest sports, I think, in my opinion. It’s hard to do it. It’s hard to start. The problem is getting people out the door is the hard part. Once they are out, they’re out. They will love it. They will stick to it. That’s what happen to me.
I just realized it’s all about, you know, getting the job done, and focus.
If you wanted to be a pro, you have to live like a pro life.
I owe running a lot because I met a lot of people from different background, different religion, different color, different countries, different nations. But when we sit together, we speak the same language.
It is an individual sport, but when you do it, you do it to other people.
Running is like when I do it, I get together with people, I learn from people, and I run with people. That’s how I see it.

  • Nick Butter: Running Makes You Value Your Time On This Planet-R4R 039
Want to hear something incredible?  Nick Butter ran a whole marathon at the young age of 11 years old.  Yes, I would say that is incredible.
This interview is for those who love adventure, endurance running, and are passionate about life.
After running 318 marathons, Nick still labels himself as nobody special.  From all these experiences, he gives us advice and unique tricks on what to do when we are hurting during a race.
He believes everyone should make the effort to push or challenge themselves.   He says he likes to push the boundaries.  He sees training not only for the body, but the mind, as well.  He also believes anyone can run a marathon if they have the desire to do so.
We discuss a process of adding more time to your life so you can be more productive with the short amount of time we have on earth.  It’s called getting up an hour or so earlier daily.  I do this, and encourage you to try this to accomplish more in your life.
He gets real while sharing one of his running failures and what he learnt from it.  He also shares ideas on staying mentally strong while struggling.  He provides specific examples of how he used mental toughness to get over his failure.
As a charity fundraiser, he describes the environment and safety obstacles he will need to take into consideration for his Running the World 196 running challenge.  This is his world record attempt to set 8 world records for running a marathon in every country starting in January, 2018 and to raise money for prostate cancer.

    What You Will Learn About

    * What Nick means by leaving a legacy and why it is important to him.
    * How you can get out of your comfort zone.
    * How to help others or yourself change their/your negative outlook on life.
    * How can you pick a challenge that your body can handle, but is still a stretch for you.
    * Why he started Running the World 196 and what it is about.
    * Why should humans push themselves?

    Inspirational Quotes
The message is about living life with intent and purpose and really being aware of what you’re doing.
If you make that active decision to want to change A) You have to really want to do that yourself, B) Try and start saying yes to things.  The more you say yes, the more opportunities you are exposed to and the more positive your outlook on life, because you’ve done something you may never have done before.
We don’t fully value the time that we have on the planet.  We will assume that next day exists.
I want the legacy to be that DO NOT underestimate how valuable and how hugely privileged we are to have this amazing life that we have and this amazing world.
I go to bed every night and I say to myself have I lived today as happy as I should be?
You give yourself an extra month of time by getting up two hours earlier every day.  Use those two extra hours in a day to do what you really want and that will probably start to change your outlook on life.
I fundamentally believe that most people on the planet that are able bodied can get out of bed and go and run a marathon.  Now, it’s going to be hard, it’s going to be painful, but running I believe, again it’s only an opinion, but I believe is mostly in your mind.  What training does for me, yes,

If you believe in something, you can do it.

Things don’t work for a reason.  You need to identify why, work on it, and learn from it.

I kind of like the idea of failing. It sounds ridiculous, but I like the concept of doing stuff and not being able to do it and coming back again, because it means you truly pushed yourself.

  • Emma Coburn: What it Feels Like When Your Dream Comes True -R4R 038
The steeplechase is not a race people normally talk about let alone know what is involved in it.  Do you?  Emma Coburn does.  Her specialty lies in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Emma is as real as it gets, and shows the real side of herself here.  She tells us of her adventures from not liking to run to working hard to become a world champion.  She believes that all the various water and mountain sports she participated in growing up attributed to the steeplechase clicking with her.
She discusses her roommate and the unique culture at her university that bonded her teammates, made a huge impact on her career, and made her big goals seem more attainable.  I hope many of us can name at least someone who has inspired us or made an impact on us with running.
Emma goes into elaborate detail about what she was thinking and feeling during this year’s 2017 World Championships in London.  She shares her strategy during the race that led her to win.  The race was not all physical, as she recalls the mental shifts needed while dealing with things that unexpectedly happened.

    Inspirational Quotes
I think what was challenging with running is that it’s really difficult, it hurts,  almost every day.
Running wasn’t always my number one thing, and it really wasn’t what defined me growing up.
What took me a while to really love running was getting over the fear of the individual side of it, and learning to cope with that stress and those pressures of having your performance completely rely solely on you.
I thought the water jump was super fun.  The very first time I tried it, I nearly cleared it, and it was like, oh, this is great. I wish I was doing this years ago.
I do think though there is a, um like a snowball effect.  If you see the  successes of people before you, and you just want to build on it.  And then when you’re gone, that people want to build on your success.  And it builds and builds.
The very first second I crossed the line, it felt incredible and it felt like a hard earned victory, but, umm, that I was incredibly proud of.  It still feels very special to this day.   And a little bit, still, of that dream come true.

  • Runner Safety First with Run Angel -R4R 037
A split episode of the running podcast for runner safety and gift ideas for Christmas and Holiday celebrations.
The first half of this show we talk to founder of Run Angel, David Caren. I was always one of those runners who thought I was invincible, It would never happen to me. Thankfully, it didn’t, but it could have, easily. Run Angel is a simple product that has the ability to save lives through the powerful alarm as loud as a rock concert it sends through the click of one button, while sending your “guardians” an SMS and email that you have triggered your alarm.
David tells us more about safety for runners, and this is extremely important (more than we realize) even beyond attacks, but also as we try to seek out more tranquil, peaceful moments away from our busy lives, this device could save your life.
Run Angel also features on the second half of the show, as one of the gift ideas for runners in 2017. I give over 25 of my favorite running products that I recommend you put on your list (or get for the runner in your life).
The first half is the same as a regular episode, and the second half is more conversational between you and I. Be sure to visit the gift ideas blog post associated with this to have further information and coupons for the products mentioned today.
Today’s episode is for you if you ever run alone, especially out in remote places or during dark hours. If you are looking for present ideas for yourself or other runners this Christmas, this runner ideas special will have all you need.

Today's episode is for you if you ever run alone, especially out in remote places or during dark hours. If you are looking for present ideas for yourself or other runners this Christmas, this runner ideas special will have all you need.
