I'm so grateful I've had the opportunity to connect with Zach Troublefield out of the suburbs of Charlotte, NC. On this episode, he discusses his 2023 mayday during a single family house fire, the conditions, the burns he suffered, and the aftermath of dealing with such an incident. When in in-extremis situations, there are many metabolic and emotional parameters at play. We are rarely “just” in a physical test, or rarely “just” in a psychologically stressful incident. Both our physical prowess and our mindset are intermingled and at use while on the fireground, amplifying each other at once. While we discussed the five attributes of the holistically prepared firefighter, to boil things down further, there are three main components that are required during high-risk environments: expertise in our profession, physical prowess, and the emotional regulation to endure and overcome the in-extremis event without relative harm to yourself or your team.
